George McFly is a fictional character in the Back to the Future trilogy. He is portrayed by Crispin Glover in the first film and by Jeffrey Weissman in the second and third installments. The role of George McFly was written with John Lithgow in mind, but he could not get out of his commitment to Harry and the Hendersons. The role was then offered to Eric Stoltz, who turned it down to direct an off-Broadway play. According to Bob Gale’s audio commentary on Back to the Future, Glover was cast because he was one of the few young actors who could portray someone “wimpy” yet capable of standing up for himself after being inspired by his son Marty.
George Douglas McFly is a resident of Hill Valley, California and Lorraine Baines’s husband. He has three children with her: Dave, Linda and Marty. In 1955, George works as a writer for a small newspaper company called the Hill Valley Telegraph under editor Mr. Tannen. He is also a science fiction fan and enjoys writing stories about Martians landing in California, which are often dismissed by his boss as nonsense. Because of this, he is often bullied by Biff Tannen and his gang; if they do something bad to him
George Douglas McFly is a fictional character in the Back to the Future trilogy. He is the father of Dave, Linda and Marty McFly. He was portrayed by actor Crispin Glover in the first film and by Jeffrey Weissman in the second and third installments. George’s role in the series is as a victim of bullying, primarily at the hands of Biff Tannen and his gang, until Marty McFly helped him to stand up for himself, thereby changing the future for the better.
In 1985, George was a very shy and nerdy man who worked as a writer for The Hill Valley Telegraph newspaper under Editor-in-Chief Mr. Gaedel, writing about such mundane topics as manure. He also suffered from an inferiority complex that he would have trouble standing up for himself against bullies like Biff Tannen, who had been making George’s high school life miserable since at least 1946. George was also insecure about his abilities as a science fiction writer, believing that he had no talent (in reality he was actually quite successful). As such, George wrote only one book during his lifetime, A Match Made in Space (a thinly veiled allegory of his meeting with Lorraine), which was published in 1977 but sold fewer than thirty copies. In 1985, he was a shy, socially inept, insecure high school student. At age 47 he became a successful science fiction novelist whose books were based on tales told to him by his son Marty about time-traveling adventures on which he had been accompanied by Doc Brown.

Glover declined to reprise his role as George McFly for the sequels, so the producers used old footage of him from the first film, with a different actor supplying new dialogue. This resulted in a lawsuit from Glover, who objected to the unauthorized use of his likeness.
The lawsuit was settled out of court, with Glover receiving an undisclosed sum and a guarantee that producers could no longer use a performer’s likeness without their prior approval.
