Unless you’re lucky, and I mean really lucky, you’ll need a lot more than just talent to get work as an actor in Hollywood. Just like anything else, you have to have training. Talent is nice to have, but it does not guarantee success or even a living wage in the entertainment industry.
There are several different types of acting classes available in Los Angeles. From scene study and monologue at private schools, to audition techniques at commercial studios and voice-over classes everywhere, there is something for everyone.
So if you’ve decided that you want to be an actor (or actress), how do you know where to start? Well, first you need to make sure you have some basic skills before seeking professional training.
First off, unless your goal is Broadway or theater productions, the majority of auditions are going to be cold reads. That means the casting director will give you sides (a scene from the script) when you get into the room and ask that you perform them without any preparation or rehearsal time with other actors. You’ll probably be reading off a teleprompter too so memorizing lines isn’t really an issue for most on-camera work.
If you can’t perform
The quality of the instruction is one of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a school. Look for schools with instructors who are working actors, as they will have the most current knowledge about the industry and what is going on in Hollywood.
