What is it about Hollywood that makes actors go crazy? There are many theories, but we can boil it down to one main idea: the movie industry is hard.
It’s hard to be rejected and abused by casting directors and producers when you’re just trying to land a job. It’s hard to play out your darkest emotions and moments in front of a camera and an audience. And it’s hard to maintain your physical health while acting in the Hollywood grind.
So how do you stay healthy in the Hollywood grind? Here are 10 tips for leading a sustainable acting career:
1. Drink water before and after every audition, meeting, class, or rehearsal.
2. Eat something nutritious before every event.
3. Get enough sleep (at least 8 hours) every night. If you have trouble sleeping, use melatonin or lavender oil (or both).
4. Avoid alcohol and drugs (including marijuana) at all costs. They may seem like fun, but they will lead to addiction problems later on if you’re not careful now!
5. Exercise regularly (preferably aerobic exercise such as running, swimming, or biking). If you can’t seem to fit it into your schedule, take
The Hollywood grind can take a toll on anyone, even the fittest. The constant pressure to be perfect and meet someone else’s image of beauty can leave you feeling defeated and exhausted. For an actor or actress, a career in Hollywood is all about looking your best. But maintaining this kind of physical appearance is not always easy for those around you, or for the environment. How do you stay healthy?
I am here to give you some tips about how to be healthy in Hollywood, for both yourself and the planet. By implementing these simple changes into your daily routine, you will feel better from the inside out. Not only that, but your body will thank you for it later!
“I’m stressed. I’m tired. I’m overworked. I haven’t slept in days. I’m not eating right. Oh and I want to lose 5 pounds so I can audition for this role.”
If you are a working actor, chances are you have said this, or at least thought it, more than once in your career.
The grind of the entertainment industry is unlike any other profession and it is hard to stay on top of your game when there is always another audition around the corner and you never know when your next booking will be.
But staying healthy and sustainable should not only be a priority because of how it affects your career but because it will make you happy, reduce stress and keep you living a long and prosperous life!
As an actor/actress, you are constantly being told what to do and how to be. Your body is not your own, your time is not your own, and even your mind isn’t always your own. You give yourself over to the power of the director, the casting director, or whoever is in charge at the moment.
You are constantly on call. You never know when you’ll have an audition or a meeting or if you’ll be booked for a job today or called out of town tomorrow. It’s so easy to get caught up in all of it and lose sight of who you are and what matters most to you.
And yet, especially as an actor/actress, it’s important that you take care of yourself. After all, your health and well-being affect how well you can do your job. The better shape you’re in physically and mentally, the more energy you will have to use toward becoming a better actor/actress and getting more jobs!
So how can busy actor/actresses stay healthy? The following are some tips I’ve discovered that work for me:
There are lots of articles and blogs out there about how to “make it” as an actor in Hollywood. But I want to talk about what happens once you do. I’m a working actor and I’ve been doing it for almost ten years now. It’s a great job but the hours are long, the work is sporadic and the competition is intense. How do you stay healthy in this town? It’s not easy!
Here are some tips that have helped me:
1) Get sleep: Sleep is so important! The best way I know how to get good rest while working on a show is to set up a routine and stick to it. Go to bed at the same time every night, even if you aren’t tired or don’t have work the next day. You will thank yourself when you have a call time at 4:30am!
2) Exercise: This seems self-evident, but it can be tough when your schedule changes all the time. I like to go for a run or hike when I can, but yoga is also great because it can be done anywhere, anytime. The key is consistency. Try to make time for exercise at least 3 times a
As an actor, you are your instrument. Similar to athletes, you have to take care of yourself and maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to do your best work. For me, it’s essential to eat well, exercise and get enough sleep.
I also try to stay balanced mentally and spiritually. I’m not a religious person per se, but I practice meditation and qigong as a way to keep my energy flowing.
It may sound simple, but I always start with water. It’s the best thing for you! Staying hydrated is key for beautiful skin and keeping your body from feeling sluggish. I usually carry around an S’well bottle filled with ice water. I drink one 32-ounce bottle before noon, then another during the rest of the day. By the time I go to bed, I’ve had four bottles of water (minimum).
If you feel like you need an extra boost in the morning, try hot lemon water first thing when you get up. It will detox your system, help digestion and give you some Vitamin C all at once.
For breakfast, I enjoy oatmeal with berries or chia seed pudding topped with almonds or granola and coconut chips.
1. Drink lots of water!
2. Try to incorporate exercise into your everyday life.
3. Take a break on the weekends!
4. Get plenty of sleep!
5. Avoid being stressed!
6. Eat healthy foods!
