Boardwalk Empire, the new HBO show starring Steve Buscemi, has generated a lot of buzz. The show is set during the prohibition era and tells the tale of a corrupt politician and his henchmen.

I was wondering if anyone had the chance to see it. I was considering watching it but then I read some reviews that said it was dull and overbearing. Can anyone give me their opinion on it?

“BOARDWALK EMPIRE”

HBO’s new show “Boardwalk Empire” is getting a lot of buzz and a lot of people are talking about it. I’m sure most of you have at least heard of it. I have to admit that I’d never heard of the real life historical figure, Enoch Johnson, who the main character is based on, until I watched the first episode, but now that I’ve done some research on him, I’m hooked.

I love all things gangster and this show is definitely American Gangster! This is no Sopranos though as Martin Scorsese is directing it. You can see his mark in every frame of this film as he has also directed such films as Casino and Goodfellas. The show takes place in Atlantic City during the prohibition years when people like Al Capone and Bugsy Siegal ruled the land.

The story follows Jimmy Darmody played by Michael Pitt who is an ex WWI soldier who was a whiz kid in high school and had his whole life ahead of him until he met up with Nucky Thompson played by Steve Buscemi who brings him into his world of crime and corruption.

The first thing that caught my attention when watching Boardwalk Empire was

I’m looking for a new show to watch. I loved Boardwalk Empire, but sadly they only made 5 seasons of it. Is there another show out there that is similar, in that it has similar themes, characters, or story?

Edit: I realize that it was not the most interesting show in the world. I watched it because the acting was good and the stories were engaging. Also, I am looking for a show to watch over a period of time (like a year). So far, I’ve watched all the seasons of Breaking Bad and all the original run of Twin Peaks.

Terence Winter, the creator of HBO’s new series “Boardwalk Empire,” knows a thing or two about gangsters. The former “Sopranos” writer-producer is so encyclopedically informed about organized crime that he can hold his own with Martin Scorsese, who is directing the pilot episode of “Empire,” a drama set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City.

Winter says that he has always been fascinated by history and that in researching his latest project, which stars Steve Buscemi as a political boss who runs bootlegging and prostitution rings, he kept coming across Irish names.

“If you look at any major city in America [during Prohibition], if you look at the major crime figures, they are almost all Irish,” Winter says. He cites the case of Al Capone, the Italian-American Prohibition-era Chicago mobster who used to work for Johnny Torrio and then Frankie Yale, both of whom were Italian immigrants — but who worked for Big Jim Colosimo, an Italian racketeer from Calabria who had settled in Chicago and married an Irish woman.

“All of those guys worked for Big Jim Colosimo,” Winter says. “The whole chain of command was Irish.”

I really liked the first episode. It was good to see Michael Pitt in a lead role as Jimmy Darmody. He was excellent in Murder By Numbers and Last Days, but his scene stealing performance in The Dreamers is what got him noticed by people who don’t watch a lot of independent films.

I had read that they were trying to cast an Irish actor as Nucky Thompson but were having problems finding an actor who could pull off the accent. They finally went with Steve Buscemi after they couldn’t find anyone better and it turned out to be the right decision. I think he’s going to be great in this role and can see him getting an Emmy nomination for Best Actor next year.

I would love that to be true. I think that this is the most important point in his essay. It’s definitely what he wants you to remember, and one of the points I was trying to make in my last essay. If you’re not excited when you start your startup, something is terribly wrong. You should have a burning desire to do it.

If you’re excited about your startup on Monday morning, then it’s more likely that you’ll enjoy working on it for the next ten years. What most people consider as excitement is only a temporary high like caffeine or sugar, but what we entrepreneurs need is a persistent excitement that gets us through the tough times when we’d rather not continue working on our startups because of the lack of progress or revenue.
