Bellatrix Lestrange is a fictional character in the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. In the series, she is a Death Eater who joins in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and tortures Neville Longbottom’s parents into insanity. She also serves as Lord Voldemort’s chief lieutenant and most loyal supporter.
In the film adaptations of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Bellatrix is portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter, who also portrayed Queen Elizabeth II in The King’s Speech (2010).
Lestrange was portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter in the Harry Potter film series. She had initially auditioned for the role of Bellatrix’s sister Narcissa Malfoy, but the casting team decided that she would be better for the part of Bellatrix. She described her character as “pure evil”. According to an interview with Empire, she based her characterisation of Bellatrix on Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction (1987), a role which was played by Glenn Close.
Bellatrix Lestrange was a pure-blood witch, the elder daughter of Cygnus and Druella Rosier, and the elder sister of Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy. She attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from 1963-1970. After graduating, she joined the Death Eaters.
Bellatrix was married, despite her heritage, to Rodolphus Lestrange and had one son with him. She was also a cousin of Sirius Black, Harry Potter’s godfather.
Bellatrix was considered highly dangerous by both the Ministry of Magic and Order of the Phoenix. She fought in several battles of both wizarding wars and played an important role in Lord Voldemort’s return in 1995. She died in the Battle of Hogwarts on 2 May 1998 after Neville Longbottom disarmed her during a duel.
Bellatrix was named for the star (Alpha Orionis) in the constellation Orion, which is Latin for “female warrior”.
