When we think of time management, we often think of staying focused and avoiding distractions. But in this digital age, where everything is at your fingertips, it’s important to know how to focus and how to divide your time towards the most important tasks.

Recently, I was able to talk with some of the top business leaders in the country about how they manage their time. Here are some of their tips on managing your schedule, managing projects and much more from the experts themselves.

Schedule Better

A calendar is your friend. It can be a Google calendar, an Outlook calendar or even an old-fashioned paper calendar on the wall. Whatever you prefer will do the trick, as long as you use it consistently.

Use that calendar and put all appointments, meetings and events on it right away so you have a complete picture of your week ahead. Then put any quick reminders you need in between those blocks — like making calls or following up with emails — so they get done in between meetings or while waiting at an appointment.

So if you can’t manage your time, then what CAN you do? You can learn to manage yourself better. This way, when you do have free time to work on a project, you know exactly what to do with it and don’t waste it staring at the blank screen in front of you.

Before the Internet and computers were invented, people were more in control of their time. They would plan their schedule according to events that took place in a day. They could choose to be alone and relax or entertain themselves with friends and family. People were more social and connected with each other.

Fast forward to today, many people are spending a lot of time on the Internet in the name of staying connected. However, this is not really about connection and more about checking up on people or distraction. You don’t have to spend 2 hours on Facebook when you can get all the information you need within just 10 minutes!
