I’ve been a professional voice actor since 2001. I’ve voiced hundreds of commercials and promos, dozens of cartoon characters, and even some video games. I didn’t have any formal training in voice over when I started, so I went through a LOT of trial and error trying to figure out what works.

There are several ways you can make a living as a voice actor, but one simple way is by creating your own web series. That’s exactly what I did. After putting together the show for about two months, I landed my first paid gig. The rest is history!

Making a web series can be as simple as buying a microphone and recording yourself in the privacy of your own home.
The first step is choosing which type of web series you want to make: live action or animation?
If you’re going for live action, you’ll need to have access to cameras and actors. You’ll also have to learn how to edit your footage and add music and sound effects.
If you choose animation, all you need is a microphone and some time with your computer. There are plenty of animation programs that are free or cheap enough for anyone to use.
Once you’ve decided on the type of web series you want to make, it’s time to plan out the story.
When creating an animated web series, don’t try too hard to make it perfect. Animation takes forever, so don’t worry about making something that looks exactly like the shows on TV. Just get something done! It’s better than nothing!
Keep in mind that anything can be made into a web series: It doesn’t have to be funny!

Most voice actors get their start by taking classes. The classes are usually taught by a professional in the field and have a curriculum designed to help you develop your talent, skill and confidence for the medium.
While classes can be expensive, they can give you a good foundation to build on and help connect you with like-minded people who are eager to learn. If possible, try to find a mentor who will give you feedback on your work. And if you find someone willing to take you on as an intern and observe them working in the field, it’s even better. This hands-on experience is invaluable.
The next step is finding work. There are several ways to do this: post a casting call online, send out demos, or join a professional association that connects voice actors with casting directors. Casting calls and demos can be found online at sites like Voice123 or Voices.com. To join a professional association, check out World-Voices Organization or The Society of Voice Arts and Sciences.
Once you’ve got your foot in the door, keep practicing! Record yourself reading scripts over and over until you get it right, or join an improv class that’ll teach you how to improvise on the spot. You never know when these skills will come in handy
