So how do actors prepare for a role? See this entertaining interview with an actor who talks about preparation and research.

“In the beginning, I don’t want to know anything about [the character] at all,” he begins, shifting in his seat. “The point is, you want to discover it as you act.”

He earned critical praise for his performance as a man struggling to keep his family together during the Great Depression in The Grapes of Wrath.

“A lot of it is based on instinct. You are always trying to put yourself in the position of your character,” he says, looking down at his lap. “I was fortunate enough to have some relatives who were part of that period.”

He pauses, gathering his thoughts before continuing: “They had such a pride about them and such dignity about them. They really helped me get into character.”

I was fascinated to hear Kevin Spacey talk about how he prepares for a role. Not only is he a great actor but he clearly has a deep understanding of what acting is and what it means to him. He also talks honestly about his own insecurities and self-doubt.

The interview is well worth watching:

The actor had a lot of responsibility, as the director did not provide much guidance. The director was very specific about what he didn’t want, but gave no direction towards any solutions. The actor managed to get through this by taking the time to prepare for the role. He did research on the character, spending time with people similar to his character and in similar situations. He also spent a lot of time thinking about the character, imagining the way he would act in different circumstances.

When asked about his process for taking on such an emotional role, he said that he really thought about his own emotions and memories from past experiences in order to bring out these emotions during filming.

The actor talked a little bit about what it was like working with other actors, how they were always reading lines together and how they were always bouncing ideas off each other. He said that it’s important to be open to ideas from others, because sometimes you can come up with something better than you expected just by listening to someone else’s input.

Overall the interview was very informative, and I learned many new things about acting and preparation for roles.

In this interview, the actor talks about how he prepared for his roles as a tortured soul in a film and a man who is slowly losing his mind in another. He talks about specific things he did to ready himself for the part, like watching videos of people with diseases similar to the one that afflicted his character.

In the second part of the interview, the actor describes some of his other characters and how he approached them. For example, for one role he had to learn to play guitar, but because he didn’t want to learn guitar like someone who has a lot of experience playing guitar, he decided to learn it like a complete novice would. He describes how he went into stores and asked strangers how they would approach learning guitar if they were just starting out.

Prior to an audition, actors prepare by reading the script, analyzing and researching their character, and studying the plays of other actors. Acting is a craft that can be learned and can be improved through practice. An actor must have a great deal of confidence before stepping onto the stage. Once on stage, they may forget their lines or miss their mark, but they must continue on.

Character development is the most important part of an actor’s preparation. They must learn as much as possible about their character prior to entering into rehearsals with the cast. They must know that their character has a certain temperament and act accordingly. The actor should know how old his/her character is, where they were born, if they have any family or children, what they do for a living, etc.

Once the above research has been completed, then it is time to go into rehearsal with the director. It is at this time that an actor learns blocking (where he/she is going to move on stage), timing (how long he/she will speak), and interactions with other characters (what he/she will say).

Acting is an art form and no two actors are alike. However, there are commonalities in each actor’s
