With the proliferation of film festivals around the world – from Sundance, to Cannes, to Tribeca and many others – short films are becoming more popular than ever. And with the availability of video cameras for consumers, making a short no longer requires a Hollywood budget. For those who’ve never starred in a short film, there are several things you might want to consider before signing on for your debut.

1. KNOW YOUR ROLE

It’s essential that you understand your role in the movie. Read the script through from beginning to end and think about how your character fits into the story as a whole. Who is this character? What are his or her motivations? How do they change throughout the story? Answering these questions will help you make acting choices and give an authentic performance that’s right for you and right for the movie.

Hello fellow film-makers and actors! I’m sure by now you’ve made that decision to do an indie short film, and are already trying to figure out what the heck you’re going to do. There are so many things to think about:

– What story will I tell?

– How long will it be?

– Who is my audience?

– What equipment will I use?

– Where can I get a crew?

– How am I going to raise money?

I’m sure there a lot more questions running through your brain. And here’s one more: How can I make my screen actors debut a success?

If you want to be an actor, you’re going to have to make a short film. It’s the natural first step for any screen actor.

Having just completed my own short film, I can tell you that acting in one is just as fun and rewarding as acting in a feature film.

Here are some tips I’ve learned along the way:

*- Make sure you’ve read the script and have rehearsed it with your director.*

If you don’t make it through the rehearsal process with your director, you won’t know what they’re looking for when they say “Action!” You may be tempted to reach for a certain kind of performance if you haven’t fully rehearsed, and then find yourself on set not knowing what to do. You’ll want the freedom to try different things, but if you don’t understand your director’s direction, or how they want this scene to feel, it will be much harder to go back and try again until they get it right.

If you’re getting ready to make your first short film, you’re in for a wild ride. I know this because I’ve been there. My name is Morpheus Ravenna and with the help of my friend Yves Langlois, I made a short film called “The Secret of Trees.” It was a crash course in filmmaking and we learned many lessons along the way that may be of interest to you as well.

When we started our project, we were not professional filmmakers; rather, my friend had written an article about how trees can communicate with one another for a magazine and had contacted me about making a video about it. The only problem was finding enough material from different places at once since most people are unlikely to travel extensively just so they can shoot footage while they’re there… Our solution was simple: rent equipment locally wherever possible!
