Charlie Bucket, the child actor behind Wizard of Oz’s favorite hero, has stepped forward 35 years later in a blog outlining the life of a child whom played the character Charlie Bucket but grew up to be a hero.
Charlie Bucket was born on September 7th, 1967 in Los Angeles, CA to parents John and Elizabeth Bucket. The young man was an only child and his passion for acting began at age five when his mother enrolled him into an after-school acting program. He was nominated at age seven for Best Child Actor for playing Charlie Bucket in the 1974 film ‘Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ but lost out to a young Jodie Foster for her role in ‘Taxi Driver’.
When asked about that loss during an interview with The Today Show he said, “It was not a big deal. I just wanted to do my best and I think I did that.”
Charlie Bucket continued his acting career through high school but eventually decided he wanted more from life than just acting; thus, he enrolled at UCLA and received his BA in International Political Science. He also joined the army reserve where he served two tours of duty overseas before being honorably discharged. After his discharge he went back to UCLA where he got his Masters in Political Science and then went
CHARLIE BUCKET: 35 YEARS LATER, THE CHILD ACTOR BEHIND WIZARD OF OZ’S FAVORITE HERO STEPS FORWARD
A lot of people think that Charlie Bucket is a fictional character from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. But what some people don’t know is that Charlie Bucket was actually a real child from the United Kingdom who was cast in the role based on his remarkable story.
In the film, Charlie Bucket is portrayed as an impoverished child who grew up with very little to his name. In reality, the young boy was actually in a similar predicament while growing up in England. He had been abandoned by his parents at birth and spent most of his childhood living in a dumpster behind a candy factory.
To pay for his basic necessities such as food and shelter, he would collect bits of candy that he found lying around in the factory’s parking lot or dumpster. He would also collect dust particles that were left over from the candy making process and sell them to local children for small amounts of money.
The child actor that brought Charlie Bucket to life, from the beloved children’s book turned movie, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, steps forward after 35 years of hiding.

He was chosen from a pool of over 10,000 children for his ability to convey innocence and wide-eyed wonder on camera. He was also especially good with animals, which would come in handy for the squirrel scene later in the film.
Charlie Bucket’s mother, Peggy Bucket, recalls the event well: “I always knew my Charlie was special,” she said. “He had such a beautiful singing voice and he played the guitar like nobody I’d ever heard before.”
Placing her hand gently on her son’s shoulder she added, “And look at him now! A big-shot lawyer taking on big-shot cases!”
