The other day I was watching The Dick Van Dyke Show. I wondered what the actor who played Buddy Sorrell on this classic television series was doing today. After a little research I discovered that he was still alive and well at the age of ninety-two.
I then wondered how many other actors and actresses were still with us. After looking into it, I discovered that the answer to this question was: not very many, and most of them were old. There were certainly quite a few who had died in the last ten years, but no one who had made their mark in the sixties or seventies or even eighties.
There are a number of reasons for this, not least of which is that people are living longer than they used to; but also because actors have been getting older and older over time as well. The average age at which people start acting is now thirty-seven, according to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Back in the 1940s, when Hollywood studios were still hiring actors directly out of high school or college, it was only twenty-five.
The best actors in the world, it is said, become so by literally throwing themselves into their roles. They lose themselves in the character they are playing and become that person. This is not always easy to do. It takes a lot of practice, dedication and skill to be able to suspend reality and live the life of another person for a few hours a day.
In order to do this, actors must create a relationship with the character they are playing, as well as understand what motivates them and makes them tick. They will also have to be able to understand the language they speak, how they move and how they react to various situations. Creating these relationships takes time and hard work and no two actors will use the same techniques or methods in order to get into character.
Some actors prefer using their imagination when creating characters; others like to study people around them on public transport or at shopping malls. Some like to spend time alone before a performance in order to get into character while others like to have friends around them so that they can bounce off each other’s energy. No matter what technique an actor uses, if he or she is any good at all, then we won’t see the actor but rather the character he or she is playing on stage

Van Dessel was born on November 15, 1954 in Antwerp, Belgium. He started his career as an actor in the year 1974 at the age of 20 years old. He joined the military and was offered a job at an army base where he worked as a mechanic. After serving in the military, he went back to school and studied business management at the University of Antwerp where he earned his master’s degree in Business Administration.
Van Dessel began his acting career by playing small roles in TV commercials and movies such as “The Young Doctors” and “The Big Time”. He also had guest appearances on TV shows like “The Jeffersons” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”. After having success with these roles, he decided to pursue acting full time.
