The blog, 41 Black Actors Who Are Not Playing a Thug in Their Upcoming Roles, was launched Wednesday night by The Root and is available at NonThugs.tumblr.com.
“We know that Hollywood is full of talented black actors and actresses, so why do we have to keep seeing them play thugs, gangsters, drug dealers or some other negative stereotype?” asked The Root’s editor-in-chief, Henry Louis Gates Jr., in announcing the initiative. “We hope that this new Tumblr will demonstrate the range of films coming out this summer that feature black actors in non-thug roles.”
The blog features more than 40 images from films featuring black actors and actresses such as Forest Whitaker (playing a U.S. president in Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Michael B. Jordan (who stars as an aspiring Olympian in Fruitvale Station) and Gabourey Sidibe (who plays a young nurse seeking love in The Reluctant Fundamentalist).
