For a while, it was great. Some of the best television shows on TV today are an hour long and have been for years. But what about the 90s? In the 90s, some of the best television shows on TV were half an hour long. And many of those shows were created by actors who also sang on their shows.
The 90s gave us iconic shows like Friends, Seinfeld and The Simpsons. It also gave us Friends theme song I’ll Be There For You, Seinfeld theme song Who Are You and The Simpsons theme song Do The Bartman. These songs were sung by the actors who created those shows. But there are many other actors from the 90s who were also singers. Can you guess which actor sang on which show?

It’s hard to imagine a time before Netflix and Hulu. Before we could watch what we wanted, when we wanted. But it was true! Once upon a time, people had to wait for their favorite shows to be on television, at a specific time and date, or else they would have to wait for the next episode. And sometimes it was weeks before the next episode aired! The horror!
But even then, there were some shows that made you eager to sit down in front of the TV at 8 o’clock sharp. There were “Must-See” nights of television that had everyone talking around the water cooler, or in class during break.
Monday was a big night (or at least it used to be) with Friends and Seinfeld battling it out for ratings supremacy. Tuesday brought us Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Wednesday had Dawson’s Creek – not only did its cast sing but so did many of its guest stars! – and Thursday brought us Will & Grace, Frasier and ER.
And while some of your favorite shows were created by actors who also sang (Buffy’s creator Joss Whedon sang on Angel), others weren’t so lucky. Here is a list of some of our favorite 90s TV shows that ended up being sung
You probably know all the words to your favorite theme song, but can you guess who is singing? These actors and actresses from your favorite 90s TV shows had some serious vocal talent.
Zach Braff
Before Zach Braff was a doctor on Scrubs, he sang the show’s theme song “Superman” by Lazlo Bane. He also sang other songs during the show, including “Let It Be,” and “A Little Less Conversation.”
Hayden Panettiere
Hayden Panettiere starred as young singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville. And believe it or not, she was actually singing during the show! Her song, “Telescope,” even reached No. 1 on the US iTunes chart.
Lea Michele
On Glee, Lea Michele played Rachel Berry, a glee club member who loved to sing. But Lea Michele also sang in real life, including some of Rachel’s solos like “I Dreamed A Dream” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade.” She also released her own album called Louder in 2014!
Matthew Morrison
As Mr. Will Schuester on Glee, Matthew Morrison helped guide his students’ musical development. But he didn’t just act out playing the piano:
I was surprised when I first heard about this. I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised. After all, many of our favorite 90s shows sang theme songs. It’s not that strange to think that they were sung by the actors on the show.
I’m talking about shows like Home Improvement, Seinfeld, Friends, and more. Most of us know that the main characters of these shows were played by actors who also sang on them. But what we don’t know is who was singing on those shows.
For example, I have no idea who sang The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air theme song. And for reasons unknown to me, I’ve never watched a single episode of Friends. That’s why it took me a while to realize that Jennifer Aniston actually sang the Friends theme song.
I’ve done some research and found out who was singing on some of my favorite 90s TV shows! Check them out below!
