Welcome to the Wonder Actors’s Guide to Good and Evil, a blog on how good and evil are portrayed in movies along with a list of fictional “Goodness” or “Evilness” in popular films. We intend to give you our take on the morals of major characters from films that have come out recently.
We will be grading character’s morality based on a scale of -5 to +5; -5 being the most evil and 5 being the most good. The rating is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to:
– How much damage does this character do?
– How much personal benefit does this character receive?
– How much selflessness is displayed?
– Is there any hope for redemption?
I am a professional actor, son of a professional actor, and cousin to many actors. I spent my early childhood in the theatre, and was schooled in the art of acting by teachers who learned from Stanislavski himself. I have been acting professionally for thirteen years now, and I am passionate about my craft.
As actors, we embody characters. We delve deeply into the lives of the people we portray and bring them to life on stage. My goal is to help you understand how to make your own characters come alive by deepening your understanding of morality in its fictional (and non-fictional) forms.
I will be writing about how good and evil are portrayed in movies along with a list of fictional “Goodness” or “Evilness” in popular films. I hope this blog will help guide you towards understanding what makes these characters good or evil and how you can apply this knowledge to your own acting career!
The following is a list of films and/or characters who “Wonder Actors” feel are either representative of good or evil. To be considered for the list, films had to have grossed over $100 million at the North American box office.
The films are listed in alphabetical order by title, and the characters are listed in alphabetical order by last name. The “Goodness” or “Evilness” score is measured on a scale of 0-10.
The Goodness/Evilness scale was created in 2010 by Wonder Actors. The scale is subjective, but summarizes a long process of research and analysis conducted by Wonder Actors’s staff.
The Goodness/Evilness scale is based on an individual’s:
• Good deeds (positive actions)**
• Bad deeds (negative actions)**
• Promotion of good/evil (influence)**
• Intentions**
• Consequences
Good or Evil?
Wondering what to watch on Netflix tonight? There is an easy way to make a choice. Just figure out whether the hero is good or evil. If so, you have your match.
Goodness and evil are the two main characters in every story. More importantly, they are the two main characters in life too. They are each other’s opposites, but they also define each other. You can’t have one without the other.
Sometimes this looks simple: either someone is one hundred percent good or one hundred percent bad, right? No, usually not. Real people are more complicated than that and so are fictional ones. Almost everyone is a mixture of both and almost everyone has some form of “good” and “evil” in their character. It is all about proportions. The fictional characters you will find on this blog reflect that fact as well, and it is their proportions of good and evil that will guide you in your search for your next movie to watch!
So why not give it a try? Check out my list of movies now!
