A resume is a marketing tool. It reflects who you are and what value you can bring to an organization. In this article, we’ll give you some tips on how to start and what to include in your resume.
What’s A Good Resume?
A good resume has three main components: Your personal brand, your accomplishments and your future potential. These are the 3 things recruiters want to see when they first review your resume.
When writing a resume, keep in mind that it should be no more than one page long. The shorter the better! Employers want to see only the most relevant information about you and not every single thing you’ve done in your life.
Being concise is important because it shows that you know how to prioritize information and identify the most important things about you as a candidate.
The other reason for having a short resume is that employers have limited time to review resumes, so anything longer than one page will likely get thrown out.
With that said, let’s go over each component of a good resume one by one:
1) Personal Brand
Your personal brand is what makes you unique amongst everyone else applying for the same job as you. It helps set yourself apart from everyone else and differentiate yourself from others
Don’t worry about what’s “good” or “bad”. Instead, make sure your resume tells your story.
Last month I gave a talk at The New York Public Library on the topic of resumes. At the very beginning of my talk, I asked everyone in the audience to raise his or her hand if they had ever seen a “good” resume. The majority of people raised their hands. Then I asked them to keep their hands up if they had ever seen a “bad” one. Just about every hand stayed up, some even higher.
After the talk, a woman approached and told me that she had recently been laid off from her job and was attending my talk because she desperately needed to improve her resume – but she wasn’t sure how. She told me that in the past she had always relied on recruiters to help her write her resume, but since she’d been laid off, recruiters were no longer taking her calls. When I asked what she thought made for a good resume, she answered: “I don’t know…but it should look good.” That’s when I realized why most people are so confused about resumes: because we all have different ideas of what makes for a “good” one!
What is the definition of a
The ultimate goal of your resume is to get an interview. The interviewer’s decision to invite you for an interview will be based on the information provided in your resume. Your resume is your personal marketing tool and you need to ensure that it markets you well. A poorly written resume will not get you very far.
Your resume should present a clear picture of who you are and what you can do for a company. It should give the reader a positive impression of you, and make him or her want to invite you for an interview.
What is a Good Resume?
A good resume should be easy to read, logical in its flow of information, professionally looking, and most importantly, it should have no mistakes or typos. It should be written by someone who cares about getting the job done right – someone who has the skills necessary to write a stellar resume. Unfortunately, many people choose to write their own resumes and then wonder why they don’t get results.
Writing a resume is not like writing an essay or a poem or even a letter. It is more like writing technical copy on how something works or putting together an operations manual on how to make something work. This is the kind of information most people are not very good at writing about themselves (and rightly
We all know what a resume is. It’s that magical, one-page rundown of your entire professional life. A document that must encapsulate decades of experience, accomplishments, failures and successes in mere words and graphics on paper (or now online).
It’s the piece of paper (or online profile) that can make or break you professionally. In a world where people are expected to be able to do everything from computer programming to psychology to graphic design, your resume is the only thing that gives you credibility.
But what does a good resume look like? A good resume should show the hiring manager all of the skills, work experience and education you have to offer, right? As it turns out, no. It’s not enough just to say you’re qualified for a job – you have to show why you’re qualified. And not just in general: You need to show why you’re specifically qualified for this job, with this set of responsibilities at this company.
How do you do that? Well, if you write your resume thinking about what they want rather than what you want, I guarantee you’ll see results. If your resume is written with the hiring manager in mind, his or her eyes will glide along each line as he or she checks off each box
In the working world, first impressions matter. We may be told not to judge a book by its cover, but we unconsciously do it all the time. A good resume is essential in securing that all-important job interview. It is your first chance to make an impression on a prospective employer. Many job seekers will spend hours perfecting their resumes, but never give a second thought to their cover letters.
Having spent years crafting and refining your resume, why wouldn’t you take the time to make sure your cover letter is just as good? Too often cover letters are thrown together at the last minute, forgotten or completely skipped over by busy recruiters. A well-written cover letter can be the difference between getting an interview and getting overlooked!
A simple thank-you note is probably all you need to do after a job interview. But how can you write such a note without having any idea if you got the job? Politely asking whether you were successful (and when you could expect to hear back) might seem like a perfectly reasonable thing to do – but it’s not usually done.
