Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese such as Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980) and The King of Comedy (1982). Filming began in September 2018 in New York City, Long Island, Jersey City and Newark, before concluding in November.
Joker is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on October 4, 2019.
