The movie industry is one that heavily involves millions of dollars from investors, producers and distributors. Every year new movies are released into theaters and drive-ins around the globe and some perform better than others at the box office. Top Irish Actors Movies of All Time

When it comes to the most popular movies, you will find that they have one thing in common; they have a great story line and are backed by great actors. Sometimes it is not always about the budget of the movie, but more about how well the acting is performed. This is why many times a smaller budget film with an excellent script and cast can out perform a larger budget film that has a weak script and cast.

Take for example two movies that were based on true stories; Apollo 13 starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise, and Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The first movie had a budget of $52 million dollars, but was able to pull in $355 million dollars during its theatrical run. The later had a budget of $200 million dollars, but pulled in $1.84 billion during its theatrical run making it the highest grossing film to date.

Irish cinema is small but growing. The Irish film industry has long been seen as a commercial version of the larger American film industry, using the same actors and directors and scripting style, with a few exceptions.

The best Irish actors have starred in some of the greatest movies of all time, such as Braveheart, The Boondock Saints, and The Departed. These are the top films from Ireland and the Irish actors who starred in them. Some of these movies were shot on location in Ireland and others were shot elsewhere but feature Irish actors.

Many famous filmmakers hail from Ireland, including Neil Jordan, John Boorman, Jim Sheridan, Jim FitzPatrick, Terry George, and many more. Irish actors also star in some great American films like Gangs of New York and Gangs of New York.

This is a list of Irish actors who have appeared in movies. I have included all types of films, from the big-budget Hollywood blockbusters like Titanic to the smaller independent films such as My Left Foot.

I have tried to include only those actors whom I feel are the most popular and best known to audiences in Ireland and around the world. So here they are, in no particular order:

Colin Farrell

Colin Farrell is probably one of the most recognizable faces on this list. He starred as Danny Byrne in Phone Booth (2002), which was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Actor.

Farrell has also starred in Alexander (2004) and Miami Vice (2006). He will next be seen in The Lobster (2015).

Brendan Gleeson

Brendan Gleeson is another very popular Irish actor. He’s been nominated for three Academy Awards and won one for his role as Alastair Campbell in The Wind That Shakes The Barley (2007).

His other films include In Bruges (2008), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) and Gangs Of New York (2002).

Some of the greatest actors in the world are Irish – Liam Neeson, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Farrell and Cillian Murphy are just a few.

The Irish have long been known for their way with words. Some of the funniest people to grace our screens – Dara O’Briain, Dylan Moran and Ardal O’Hanlon to name but three – are Irish.

But the Irish have also given us some of the most memorable characters in cinema history. Here is our list of the 10 best films featuring an Irish actor in a leading role.

10. The Thin Man (1934) – William Powell as Nick Charles

William Powell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but his mother was an immigrant from Ireland, so he makes our list.

The Thin Man is a comedy-mystery based on the novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. It sees Nick Charles played by Powell and his wife Nora investigate a murder case while they’re in New York for Christmas. The film marks the first screen pairing of Powell and Myrna Loy as Nora Charles, who would go on to star together in 13 more films over a period of 25 years.

Tommy Lee Jones is a popular American actor and producer. He was born in Texas in 1946 and began his acting career on the stage at Harvard University, where he studied English literature. After completing his education, he moved to New York City to study acting. He made his film debut in Love Story (1970) and landed his first leading role in the TV movie The Amazing Howard Hughes (1977).

Jones has an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1993 film The Fugitive. Other notable films include Men In Black (1997), No Country For Old Men (2007), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

He is also a producer on the Netflix series Godless, which stars Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery, Scoot McNairy and Merritt Wever as outlaws on the run from their pasts.
