The film was initially announced in March 2010, but did not begin principal photography until October 2011. After a long post-production process, the film was released in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2013, followed by a United States release on 25 December 2013. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug received critical acclaim for its improvement over its predecessor, as well as its visual effects, action sequences, performances, and musical score. It grossed over $958 million at the worldwide box office.
Following the events of An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) journeys with the Wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on an “Unexpected Journey” to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. The group are pursued by Azog and his Orc party following the events of the previous film. They are ushered along by Gandalf to the nearby home of Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), a skin-changer who can take the form of the bear.
