When you think of African American actresses, the first person that comes to mind is probably Halle Berry. She is the only black female actress to have ever won an Academy Award for best actress. That’s kind of a big deal.

In addition to Halle Berry, there are many other black female actresses who have starred in their own films and TV shows. This blog will highlight 5 of these actresses and their work.

Top 5 Female African American Actresses

We all love movies and TV shows. But have you ever noticed that most of the starring roles are given to white actors and actresses? Black actors are usually cast in “minority” roles, such as maids and butlers, or sometimes gangsters. And then there’s the negative stereotype of being a “thug” or a “ghetto kid.”

Not only that, but black female actresses are not given many starring roles at all. Even when they do get a starring role, it is usually limited to the “black genre,” such as hood films and Tyler Perry films (not that those films are bad). But let’s face it, we need more diversity on our screens.

So I decided to make a list of my top five favorite African-American actresses who have starred in films. These women are all very talented, beautiful and deserve more recognition for their work. The list is in no particular order because each woman has her own unique style and personality that cannot be compared to anyone else. Here we go:

She is best known for her roles in movies like “Ghost”, “The Color Purple” and “Sister Act”. Whoopi has also hosted several TV shows, including the popular daytime show “The View”. 2. Oprah Winfrey – Oprah Winfrey is one of the most successful African American women in the entertainment industry. She started her career as a news anchor, but later became famous for her talk show, which ran from 1986 to 2011. Oprah is also an actress, producer and philanthropist. She was ranked as the richest African American woman by Forbes magazine in 2010. This blog will discuss why she is ranked as one of the top black female actresses.

Vanessa Williams is an American singer, actress and former fashion model. She first achieved fame as the first woman of African-American descent to win the Miss America title when she was crowned Miss America 1984 in September 1983.
