1.
PETER O’TOOLE
Peter O’Toole, considered by many to be the greatest Irish actor, was born on August 2, 1932 in Connemara, County Galway. His mother was a Scottish nurse who married Francis O’Toole, an Irish bookie — he couldn’t refuse a wager. From an early age Peter was a troublemaker and dropped out of school at age 15. He enlisted in the Royal Navy but quit after only six months because of health problems. One day while walking down the street he saw actors rehearsing for a play and decided to give acting a try. A local theater company accepted him as one of their own, and by age 18 he had won a scholarship to London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). While still in school he won the famous Shakespeare Prize for his performance as “Hamlet,” which led to his being offered a contract with Laurence Olivier’s National Theater Company in London.
