The Will Ferrell of Anchorman is getting his own movie. The actor who stole the show as newscaster Ron Burgundy, is starring in a new film called “Anchorman: The Legend Continues,” and it looks like he will be just as funny this time around, if not more.
According to USA Today, the sequel will take place in the 1980s with Burgundy heading up an all-news network called GNN. In addition to starring in the film, Ferrell also co-wrote the script and serves as producer.
“I am Ron Burgundy?” he said, USA Today reported. “It’s a complete joy and honor to announce that we are making a sequel to ‘Anchorman.'”
The original “Anchorman” was released back in 2004 and made about $85 million at the box office. Although it didn’t do very well when it came out, the film has since become a cult classic and fans have long clamored for a sequel.
In addition to Ferrell, Christina Applegate will return as Veronica Corningstone-Burgundy, Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana and Steve Carell as Brick Tamland. Comedian David Koechner will also reprise his role as Champ Kind
There’s a new anchorman in town, and his name is A. Ron Burgundy.
The star of the first Anchorman film—Will Ferrell’s Ron Burgundy—is getting his own movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Adam McKay, who directed the first two Anchorman movies, will be at the helm for this project as well. And while it’s unclear whether McKay will re-team with Ferrell (the two recently made an anti-Trump PSA together), it seems likely that Ferrell will indeed return as the beloved news anchor with a sweet mustache and even sweeter jazz-flute skills.
The film is still in the early stages of development, but the plot is slowly starting to come together: According to THR, “the new film will set itself apart from other upcoming sequels by featuring an entirely new cast . . . [and] focus on a whole new family of news anchors.” In short: it’ll be like Anchorman 3, but without any of Ferrell’s costars from Anchorman 1 and 2.
McKay has already started working on this concept with Andy Mogel and Jarrad Paul (of Yes Man fame), who are reportedly writing
Will Ferrell is known for his roles as the over-the-top and hilarious characters. He has played Ron Burgundy in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” Frank “the Tank” in “Old School,” and Ricky Bobby in “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.”
Now, Anchorman‘s Burgundy is getting his own movie thanks to an upcoming project by Will Ferrell. According to Variety, the actor has a deal with Paramount Pictures for the film, which is set to be released on December 20th, 2013.
Will Ferrell will serve as a producer on the movie as well as playing the lead role. Adam McKay is also on board to produce and write the script with Ferrell. It is said that McKay might also direct again, but it has not been confirmed yet.
The original Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was released in 2004 and followed Will Ferrell’s character through his life as he tried to cope with having a woman work alongside him at his San Diego news station during the 1970s. His co-stars included Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Fred Will
In a movie studio’s marketing department, the phrase “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is not just a worn-out cliche, but an actual commandment. So when the Will Ferrell-fueled phenomenon that was Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy created a rabid fanbase who has been salivating over a sequel ever since the original came out in 2004, it was only a matter of time before Paramount Pictures would try to cash in on the comedy once again.
In an exclusive scoop coming out of The Hollywood Reporter this morning, we learned that Paramount is indeed moving forward with Anchorman 2 and that the film will be set for release sometime in 2013. Here’s what we found out about the new project:
Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and David Koechner are all signed on to reprise their roles from the first film (though no contract has yet been signed with Christina Applegate).
Director Adam McKay is currently at work writing the script with Will Ferrell.
The story will follow San Diego’s finest as they head to New York City to cover “the first 24-hour news channel.”
It’s unclear if any
Will Ferrell fans will be pleased to hear that the actor is bringing his Anchorman character, Ron Burgundy, back to the big screen for a solo movie.
After years of speculation, Ferrell made an announcement during a newscast at KX News in Bismarck, North Dakota, confirming that he’ll reprise his role as Burgundy in Anchorman: The Legend Continues.
The sequel will take place in the ‘70s and follow the now-famous newsman as he tackles the world of 24-hour cable news. In typical Burgundy fashion, he will be joined by his equally dimwitted cohorts: Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), and Champ Kind (David Koechner).
Director Adam McKay is also back on board along with Ferrell and Judd Apatow. Production begins early next year and Paramount is aiming for a November 2013 release date.
Fans of Anchorman have waited nine years for their favorite newsman to make a comeback. In the 2004 film, journalist Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) makes his mark in San Diego’s Channel 4 newsroom with a host of quirky cohorts, including Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Brick Tamland (Steve Carell), and Champ Kind (David Koechner). A sequel has been in talks since 2010, but got pushed back after studio Paramount sold the rights to another distributor.
After much debate, it was finally announced that Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues will be released on Dec. 20. Ferrell and Adam McKay — who co-wrote and directed the first movie — are back as the film’s writers, but McKay is taking on directing duties solo this time around. Ferrell recently spoke at a New York City press conference about what audiences can expect from the sequel, which picks up more than 20 years after the original Anchorman left off.
“We really wanted to take some risks,” he said, explaining that the new movie will focus on Burgundy’s move to New York City and work at the world’s first 24-hour news channel. “It was crazy how many
