The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, the latest installment in the popular Hunger Games franchise, opened on Friday to high ticket sales and audience anticipation. The Hunger Games Trilogy has soared in popularity since Suzanne Collins’ first novel The Hunger Games was published in 2008.
The trilogy is set in a dystopian future where the North American continent has been destroyed and replaced with a country called Panem. Each year, one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen are selected by lottery to participate in a brutal televised death match known as the Hunger Games.
The first book focuses on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the games and befriends another contestant named Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). The series follows Katniss as she struggles to survive the games, form relationships with her fellow contestants, and eventually lead a rebellion against Panem’s cruel President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 continues on from 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which saw Katniss and a handful of other contestants win their freedom from the games. Now working alongside President Coin (Julianne Moore) and fellow victor Beetee (Jeffrey Wright

The novels in the trilogy are titled The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010). The novels have all been developed into films starring Jennifer Lawrence, with the film adaptation of Mockingjay split into two parts. The first two books in the series were both New York Times best sellers, and Mockingjay topped all US bestseller lists upon its release. By the time the film adaptation of The Hunger Games was released in 2012, the publisher had reported over 26 million Hunger Games trilogy books in print, including movie tie-in books. The Hunger Games series has been sold into 56 territories in 51 languages to date.

The country consists of a wealthy Capitol city, located in the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by twelve (formerly thirteen) poorer districts ruled by the Capitol. Early in its history, a rebellion led by a thirteenth district against the Capitol resulted in

The first film, The Hunger Games, was released on March 23, 2012 to a massive box office opening of $152 million, the third highest of all time. It went on to gross $691 million worldwide. Catching Fire followed a year later on November 22, 2013; it broke the record for biggest midnight opening with $25 million and brought in over $855 million at the box office. Mockingjay – Part 1 continued the success last year when it opened on November 21, 2014 with $123 million and took in over $755 million worldwide. With Mockingjay – Part 2 now in theaters and more than $100 million in ticket sales already this weekend, it’s safe to say that the series is one of the biggest success stories in recent memory.
The films are based off of the beloved novels by Collins that focus on Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) who fights against all odds in a futuristic world where teens must fight to the death for their entertainment. The Hunger Games trilogy has been a pop culture phenomenon. It has been an extremely successful book series and movie franchise. The movies have grossed over $2.3 billion worldwide and the books have sold over 65 million copies in the U.S. alone (source). But what is it about this series that makes it so popular? Here are some reasons why I think it’s so popular:
The main character, Katniss Everdeen, is strong, independent, and courageous. She is a heroine that many girls wish they could be like. She has something to fight for and she doesn’t let anyone stand in her way of her goals. And she never gives up even when the odds are stacked against her.
The world that Suzanne Collins created is fascinating and complex. There are so many layers to this world and it’s easy to get lost in it while reading the books or watching the movies. It’s a world where you feel like anything can happen at any moment because nothing is ever safe or secure which makes it very suspenseful and intriguing.
I think part of what makes this series so popular is that there are three different types of characters: the good guys, the bad guys, and those who don’t really belong to either side but just want what
