Spring Break Breakthrough: A Hollywood Story is a film that follows the path of 4 students who become friends while shooting a film. The blog would be to breakdown the entire process of getting into the industry and creating a film. In this post, I will breakdown the process of finding an agent and how I did it.
I was coming up on my senior year at Chapman University, and I knew that I would need to find representation in order to get into the industry professionally. So, I started looking for agents online, and found some agencies with decent reputations. I sent over headshots, resumes, and demo reels for consideration. Most of them got back to me with a “no thanks” or even just silence. Of course, we all know that’s how the business works; you hear “no” more than you hear “yes”.
However, one agency responded positively; they wanted to meet with me in person! My dream had finally come true, or so I thought…
When I met with them they said they were interested in signing me as long as I wasn’t looking for commercials right away; that was fine by me because frankly, I had no idea what an agent did anyways!
Over spring break, I had the rare opportunity to spend time in Los Angeles and talk to various agents and filmmakers. I went out there with my friend Rachel who has been working as an actress for years. We heard about a filmmaker who was looking for ideas for short films, so we pitched him one. He said he liked it and offered to fund it himself!
We currently have no money and are trying to figure out how we can make our film for the least amount of money possible. We plan on casting our friends and shooting it around Los Angeles. The film will be a romantic comedy between two friends who are trying to figure out where they stand with each other over spring break. It is called Spring Break Breakthrough: A Hollywood Story.
“Hi my name is Alyssa and I am an aspiring actress. Ever since I was little, I’ve been scouring the internet for any information I could find to help me become a better actress. One of the main things that helped me get started in this industry was my theatre background. It gave me the confidence and experience to audition for agents, go on set, and work with other actors. When I began creating content for myself, I started to learn more about the industry from the inside out. So much of what you learn as an actor is figuring out how your character works within their world. However, I found that there was not a lot of resources out there to help actors create their own worlds.
So when I found out that another girl had been working on her own TV show in her spare time, I was really inspired. The show she created was great! It was a small idea that had been turned into something big by her passion and dedication to it. Around this time, someone suggested that we should start writing our own blog together.”
I’ve been working for the past couple of years on a screenplay. It’s based on a true story about some people I went to school with, and it deals with some issues that have been important to me for a long time.
I started writing it because I thought it would be fun to create something from scratch — to work from an idea to a finished product, without any of the middlemen who usually stand between the two. But I didn’t realize how hard that would be. Turns out that creating something from scratch is hard.
I’ve written before about the problems of getting into Hollywood, but let me give you a summary:
1. You need an agent. 2. You need an agent who is actually interested in your project, not just in the small percentage he or she will make if the project gets made. 3. You need an agent who knows people in Hollywood who are looking for projects like yours 4. You need those people to like your project enough to make it worth their while to find financing 5. You need them to be able to find financing 6. You need that money not to get pulled out at the last minute 7. And you need all this before anyone else does something similar, or before what was new becomes old news 8
How would you write a post about the making of your first feature film? I’ve had this idea for a while, but it’s only now that I feel like I could do it justice.
My name is K.C. Allen, and I’m 28 years old. As a writer/director, my first feature film just made its world premiere at SXSW (South by Southwest) on March 12th, 2010. It’s called “Spring Breakdown” and was produced by John Hegeman from Lionsgate and Terence Michael from Regent Releasing (the gay division of Here! Media). The film stars Parker Posey, Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler, and Amber Tamblyn.
For those who don’t know what SXSW is, it’s one of the most talked-about festivals in the country because it’s all about discovery; hence why we chose to premiere there this year instead of Sundance (for which we received many inquiries).
It’s not as big as Sundance yet — not nearly — but it’s growing rapidly every year and has become an amazing platform for filmmakers from around the world to get their films seen. Also, Spring Breakdown is a comedy and SXSW is a perfect fit for that genre in particular
How I Started My Career in Entertainment – Part 1 (How To Break Into The Film Industry)
By: Michael Morgan
This is the first in a series on how I started my career in entertainment. I hope to share my experience with you and give you some tips on how to get started.
I have been asked by a number of people over the years how I got started in the film industry. It’s not an easy path to navigate, but if you are willing to do the hard work, there are opportunities out there for anyone who wants them. The most common question is “How do I get started?” It’s a great question and one that I will try to address over the next couple of months.
So how did I get my start? Like many people reading this post, I was a film student at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. But that was only part of it. If you want to work in entertainment, your education is really just the beginning. There are a lot of great schools out there and they will all teach you valuable skills, but what separates great students from those who take their careers to the next level is what they do AFTER graduation
The film industry is a difficult place to break into, particularly as an actor. The following are some steps which you can take to make yourself more marketable.
1. Learn how to act. You will need to be able to take direction from others in the industry, and learn what it takes to create the character you are playing. You will also need to be able to work with other actors, as you will work with many of them on several different projects.
2. Get training and education in acting and theatre. Many universities offer degrees in acting or theatre studies, but you do not necessarily have to attend a university program in order to get the training that you need. There are many professional acting schools where you can train. The best way is to find out what the industry standards are in your area and make sure that the school meets those standards before enrolling in any program.
3. Create a demo reel of your work and make copies for casting directors and producers in your area or on location shoots that you may want to attend when they are filming locally.
4. Join an acting union if there is one in your area (SAG, ACTRA, ACTOR’S STUDIO). This allows you access to better auditions for professional roles
