You have the power to change someone’s life by speaking. I firmly believe that anyone who is passionate about their topic and has a willingness to learn can be a great public speaker. I have been giving some form of public speech for as long as I can remember – in front of my family, my friends and many different groups. I was always happy to do it, but never really knew how to get better until recently.
I am currently a Master of Ceremonies (MC) at a number of events and conferences. My goal with this blog is to help others become better public speakers by sharing my experiences, providing information on the latest research on how people react to speeches and reviewing TED Talks for the good, the bad and tips on how to improve them.
My name is David Meisner, but you can call me Davey. I am an MC and facilitator based in Melbourne, Australia.
The Meisner approach to acting is by far one of the most misunderstood, misapplied and misinterpreted acting techniques out there. But when done correctly the results are staggering!
Sanford Meisner, who trained with Stella Adler, was an American acting teacher who developed a form of Method acting that he called “The Meisner Technique”, his technique is based on the idea of “living truthfully in imaginary circumstances” and is also known for its “repetition exercise”.
It’s this repetition exercise that has caused the most confusion. The actor is required to repeat exactly what their scene partner has said back to them and then add a personal response. This seems simple enough but it requires a huge amount of concentration; while you are repeating the line you must really be listening to what your scene partner is saying and not just saying it back parrot fashion. It should actually sound like your own words. This is the first stage of developing the ability to act spontaneously.
The second part of the repetition exercise is where the personal response comes in; this should be something that you would say in real life. You must respond to what your scene partner has said as if they were actually speaking to you, not as if they were part of a play. The repetition exercise
Meisner is an acting technique developed by Sanford Meisner. It is based on the principle that acting grows out of an honest reaction to the given circumstances and other actors in the scene.
The technique emphasizes “doing” rather than “saying”. Students learn to be present and spontaneous, adapting to the environment they are in, while staying focused on their partner.
The Meisner Technique, unlike many other acting techniques, does not rely on personal experience, emotional memory or an emotional state, but instead focuses on the relationship between two actors in the moment.
