Peter Dinklage, the actor who plays Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, has had a major impact on the series.

It’s been said that without Peter Dinklage the series wouldn’t be what it is today. That’s probably true and we can easily see that with some hard numbers.

To quantify how much Tyrion has brought to Game of Thrones, I calculated the number of YouTube views on all official trailers for each season and compared them with Google searches for “Tyrion Lannister”.

I used data from Google Trends and took into account only official trailers and not any other video released by HBO.

On June 12, 2011, a little show called Game of Thrones premiered on HBO. Based on the popular book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the show quickly became a huge cultural phenomenon. The show is set in the fictional continent of Westeros and follows several noble families who are fighting for the Iron Throne to rule over all of Westeros.

One of the most popular characters in the show is Tyrion Lannister, played by Peter Dinklage. Dinklage has been nominated for 3 Emmy Awards and 2 Golden Globes for his role as Tyrion Lannister and made history when he won both his Emmy Award and Golden Globe in 2011, making him the first actor ever to win both awards for his performance in a series that debuted that year.

It is no question that Peter Dinklage’s acting chops have helped make Game of Thrones such a success. But how many people actually watch Tyrion Lannister’s scenes? We looked at YouTube views for Tyrion Lannister scenes (excluding ones where he was not present) from Season 1 to 6 and compared them with Google searches for “Tyrion Lannister” to see how they compare:

The two graphs are highly

Peter Dinklage’s portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones is one of the most compelling and celebrated performances on television. The show has become a global phenomenon with an unprecedented impact on culture and the way we consume our media. Season 1 had an average of 4 million viewers per episode, which grew to 10 million by season 5.

To get a better understanding of the show’s growth, and particularly how it was impacted by Peter Dinklage’s performance, we looked at the relationship between Google search interest for Dinklage and his character Tyrion and YouTube views for Game of Thrones episodes for each season over time.

Peter Dinklage joined the cast of Game of Thrones (GoT) in 2011. Since then, he has won an Emmy award and rapidly became a fan favorite. Tyrion Lannister is one of the few characters that are still alive. Are GoT fans more interested in Peter Dinklage than other cast members?

The answer is yes. We can see this by looking at Google Trends data. Google Trends lets us explore how often certain search terms are entered into Google search, relative to the total search volume across different regions of the world, and in various languages.

A simple way to assess the interest around a person is by searching for their name. From a Google Trends query for “Peter Dinklage,” we see that his name was searched for vastly more often than any other cast member, with the exception of Emilia Clarke (who plays Daenerys Targaryen). In fact, his peak popularity was twice as high as Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), or Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister).

Dinklage was cast in a supporting role in the film The Station Agent (2003), which earned him awards and nominations, including a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination. He went on to have smaller roles in the films Elf (2003) and Find Me Guilty (2006), before taking on his first starring role in the 2007 film Death at a Funeral. In 2011, Dinklage portrayed Trumpkin in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and the villainous Asterix & Obelix: God Save Britannia. Since 2011, he has played Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series Game of Thrones, for which he received an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film.

Dinklage made his Broadway debut in a 2002 production of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge. He also appeared as Iago in the Public Theater’s 2014 Shakespeare in the Park production of Othello alongside Anika Noni Rose as Desdemona and Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Othello.
