Going by his speech at the Edinburgh TV Festival, it is quite possible that Moriarty has worked out that if he can’t beat Sherlock Holmes by being cleverer than him, he will instead have to beat him by being more popular than him. Sherlock’s series has already secured a third season, and the second season is due to air in May.
Moriarty’s most recent film roles have been as the villainous Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, and as Professor Moriarty in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Moriarty also played Winston Churchill in The King’s Speech and Kurt Cobain in Last Days.

Moriarty, as played by Mark Gattis, is a Sherlock Holmes villain who has been called “The Napoleon of Crime” and is believed by some to be the most dangerous criminal in London. Moriarty is a Professor of Mathematics at an unnamed university in London. He is also a self-proclaimed genius who has turned his brilliance to evil and crime.
Moriarty’s genius allows him to deduce deep secrets about his opponents and his ability to manipulate people allows him to get them to do his bidding. He also has access to many resources including weapons and accomplices.
Moriarty was first portrayed on screen in Sherlock (BBC’s take on the character) by Andrew Scott in season one, episode three; A Scandal in Belgravia. Moriarty appears again in the season two finale, The Reichenbach Fall, where he kills himself after being defeated by Sherlock.

It’s mainly about Sherlock Holmes and is worth a look.
One section highlights the uniqueness of his playing Moriarty as an “intrepid detective”. This is a big departure from Conan Doyle’s original, who was never anything but the criminal mastermind and arch-enemy of Holmes (although he is not actually a detective). This site is also very reminiscent of Benedict Cumberbatch’s website http://www.benedictcumberbatch.co.uk which also features sections about Sherlock and is also worth a view.
A new site called Moriarty Actor has launched highlighting the unique aspects of Andrew Scott playing the role of the intrepid detective. The site’s creator, who goes by “The Napoleonic Complex,” began it because he felt Andrew was underappreciated in his role as Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis.
“I think people think he’s just a bad guy,” he told me in an email, “whereas I think it’s one of the most complex and interesting characters in television today.”
To that end, I asked him how he ended up creating the site. He said, “I don’t know if there’s much to tell about how I came up with the idea. It started as a hobby, and then it just evolved into something else.”
On a personal note, my favorite part of the site is a video of Andrew asking the audience at Comic Con 2013 whether or not they would love to see him play Sherlock Holmes in an alternate reality.

The Show has been able to produce two seasons so far and it is still continuing on its journey. In an interview with the BBC, Andrew Scott was asked to describe his character as a fan of the series and as an actor. He responds that he is a “huge Sherlock fan” and he has watched every episode. When asked about how he felt about taking on such an iconic role, he says that it is “terrifying”. He also explains how playing Moriarty differs from other roles:
“In some ways it’s very different but in some ways it’s very similar to other stuff I’ve done.” He also describes how he is a “big Sherlock Holmes fan” and has read many of the books.
He notes that Sherlock’s “intelligence is really sexy”. This is something that Andrew Scott has said before and will probably say again. It is interesting to note that Moriarty has the same intelligence level as Holmes. This means Moriarty can deduce things just as well as Sherlock does. This makes Moriarty more unique than most villains in television.
