I started this blog as a way to document my experience of learning the acting technique Marilyn Monroe used to become one of the most famous actresses in history.
I discovered the method when I was studying film at Emerson College and found a book called Marilyn Monroe: The Legacy by Lois Banner. It gave me insight into a side of her that I hadn’t fully understood before, and it has changed the trajectory of my career.
As any actor knows, there is no one way to act. There are many methods an actor can use, and they can all be effective in different ways. Some methods are more structured and require you to reach certain objectives or make specific choices. Others are based on exercises, such as the Meisner Technique or Method Acting. These techniques have great value and have been used by some of the greatest actors in history; however, they can be limiting if you’re trying to play a character who doesn’t fit into these structures or boxes. Monroe’s method eliminates these boundaries, allowing actors to create characters that are as complex and dynamic as real people.
Marilyn Monroe’s acting techniques were all based on the Stanislavski method, which was extremely popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the Hollywood legends from this time period, such as James Dean and Marlon Brando, used the Stanislavski method to build their performances.
