Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American actor, comedian, author, and film producer with a film and television career spanning from the 1970s. He starred in the Back to the Future trilogy in which he portrayed Marty McFly. Other notable roles have included his portrayal of Alex P. Keaton on the American sitcom Family Ties (1982–1989) and Mike Flaherty on the ABC sitcom Spin City (1996–2000). He has won five Primetime Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, a Grammy Award and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Born Michael Andrew Fox on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to parents Phyllis Fox (nΓ©e Piper), a payroll clerk, and William Fox. His family moved to Vancouver when he was very young. At age 15, he worked as a ballpark vendor at Vancouver’s Empire Stadium for the 1979 Grey Cup game between the Edmonton Eskimos and the Montreal Alouettes; this was shortly before acting became his full-time profession.

Michael J. Fox was born on June 9, 1961 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Phyllis Fox (nΓ©e Piper), a payroll clerk, and William Fox. His parents moved their 10-year-old son, his three sisters, Kelli Fox , Karen, and Jacki , and his brother Steven, to Vancouver, British Columbia, after his father, a sergeant in the Canadian Army Signal Corps , retired.

His family was of Irish origin. His childhood was a “difficult” time for him as he tried to cope with his parents’ separation in 1972. He and his siblings were raised by their mother. He also suffered from alcohol abuse and had to seek help after getting drunk at age 12.

He attended Burnaby Central Secondary School where he played basketball on the school team – the “Burnaby South Rebels”. He starred in school productions such as “Louis and Dave” and “Music Is.” After graduation in 1979 he studied acting at the Douglas College in New Westminster but left after only one year. He then moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career.
