Matthew Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to Suzanne Marie (Langford), a Canadian journalist and former press secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. His ancestry includes English, Irish, German, Swiss-German, and French-Canadian.

Perry was raised in Ottawa, Ontario where he attended Rockcliffe Park Public School and Ashbury College. He became interested in acting at age 15. However his mother felt he was too young to go to Hollywood.[2] He went to Los Angeles for his 16th birthday without her permission.[3] He later convinced his mother it was a good move.[4] He then persuaded Ryan Stiles to move with him[5].

In Los Angeles he met Chris Farley at an improv class.[6] Farley was so impressed with Perry that he suggested him for casting on Saturday Night Live (1975). Perry’s ancestry includes English, Irish, German, Swiss-German, and French-Canadian. He has two half-brothers: Jonathan Perry (born 1970) and Willy Perry (born 1990).

His mother’s family were from Quebec. His father is of English descent through his father’s original immigrant ancestor, while his mother is of part First Nations descent; Perry refers to himself as “half First Nations”.[5] His father grew up in California with Matthew’s paternal grandfather, George Perry (1912–2007), who was a stage actor.

Perry was raised in Ottawa,[7][8] where he became a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada.[9] When he was 15 years old, he moved from Ottawa to Los Angeles to pursue acting. He attended The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks.[10][11]

While growing up he was friends with future castmate Matt LeBlanc.[12][13] As a teenager, he once worked as a production assistant on A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.[14]
