Test prep is a booming industry. In 2015, the test prep market grew by 9.4%, to a value of $7.5 billion. The SAT and ACT are not really very difficult tests, but they can be very stressful tests because of how much colleges rely on them in their admissions decisions. A high score on these tests will help you get into your dream school and can ultimately shape your future career and life experiences.
I have personally taken both the SAT and ACT and scored in the 99th percentile on both tests. I had previously taken an SAT course that was not very helpful, but decided to take an online ACT course through Magoosh, which was excellent. My ACT score went up by 8 points after taking this online course! I have since been helping my younger siblings prepare for their own standardized testing, and have developed many ideas for ways that my own company, Let’s Get Educated, can improve upon the test prep industry.

When it comes to standardized testing, there has always been a rivalry between the SAT and the ACT. In fact, one of the most common questions we get asked is “Which test should I take?”
But before we can answer that question, we need to ask another: what’s the difference between the SAT and ACT?
The Basics
Let’s start with some stats. The SAT has 4 sections – reading, writing and language, math (no calculator), and math (calculator allowed) – for a total of 1600 points. Each section is worth 800 points. The ACT has 4 sections – English, math, reading, and science – for a total of 36 points. Each section is worth 36 points. That’s it!
How Long Are They?
The SAT takes 3 hours with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay portion. The ACT takes 2 hours and 55 minutes with an additional 40 minutes for the optional essay portion. So both are relatively long tests (about 3 hours), but only the ACT includes a science section!
There are more similarities between the tests than differences. Both the SAT and ACT are timed, multiple choice, pencil and paper tests that cover reading, math, science and writing. They both have a similar format (Section 1: Reading; Section 2: Writing/English; Section 3: Math; Section 4: Science),
Each test has its own unique sections. For example, the ACT contains a science section whereas the SAT does not. The ACT is also known for having more straightforward questions than the SAT.
The major difference between the two tests is that one is a reasoning test (SAT) and one is a content-based test (ACT). The SAT focuses on testing reasoning skills while the ACT focuses on testing learned information.
If you are proficient in math, science and reading comprehension, we recommend taking the ACT. If you are stronger in language arts, critical thinking or essay writing, we recommend taking the SAT.
