Jean-Louis Thoughier, who turned 80 this summer and became the oldest actor to land a role in a Broadway show when he was cast in the new revival of La Bete, took the stage for opening night at the Music Box Theatre on Wednesday.

The 100-year-old actor and his co-stars took their bows at the Walter Kerr Theatre after the second of two shows.

The show is called Heisenberg, and it’s about two strangers who meet in a train station and fall in love. Thoughier’s character is described as “a man of mystery.”

Thoughier was born in New York to French parents. He spent his early life in Paris before returning to the U.S. at age 16 and eventually becoming an American citizen.

He has appeared in several films, including The French Connection, but this is his first major television role.

Eighty-three-year-old Jean-Louis Thoughier is the oldest actor to land a role in a Broadway show. The French actor made his debut on the stage of Broadway on Monday night as he performed at opening night for the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Monday, Daily Mail reports.

Thoughier, who had been acting for the past 60 years, performed alongside another French actress and his contemporary, Lise de la Salle. Thoughier portrays Vicomte de Valmont in the play, which is based on an 18th century French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos.

The play was adapted into another version by Christopher Hampton in 1985 and it was still being staged on London’s West End as recently as 2014. The Broadway version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses opened at the Booth Theatre on Monday.

Before this role, thoughier had only appeared once in New York City and that was in 1986 when he had starred in a production of Night of the Tribades at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club.

Thoughier has also appeared in several films over the years including The Horseman on the Roof and Le Bonheur Est dans le Pre. He has also acted with famous directors like Orson Welles

Thoughier is no stranger to the stage in New York City and has appeared in numerous productions including Tis Pity Sheโ€™s A Whore with Al Pacino and Richard III with Kevin Spacey. The actor had been performing since he was eight years old but didnโ€™t start taking acting seriously until he was an adult and moved to America after serving in World War II. He eventually landed roles at the famed Actors Studio where he became friends with Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe.

Thouret’s last name is pronounced “too-ray.” His first name is pronounced “zhee-an loo-ee.” He is survived by his wife, actress Elizabeth “Betty” Thouret; their five children; his sister; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
