Tom Hardy says that he has been working on his voice for Venom, the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie. The actor said:
“I can’t wait to see it myself. It’s a bit of a development process, we’re in the middle of it now. I always intended to make him slightly different from what I’d done before and we tried a few things, but that’s all in the mix.”
Hardy is best known for his role as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and as Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. But this time around he will be playing the villainous antihero Venom, who has had a number of different hosts over the years.
It was recently revealed that Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams would be reprising their roles as Eddie Brock and Anne Weying in a new Spider-Man movie.
Tom Hardy has been very tight-lipped about his role as the titular villain in Sony’s upcoming “Spider-Man” spin-off, “Venom.” Hardy revealed he is not allowed to talk about the movie with anyone, but that didn’t stop him from opening up a little bit to Entertainment Weekly. When asked if he’s doing a different voice for Venom, Hardy said, “It is something different, yeah. It is not as obvious as that, though. There are some very specific things that I had to do in order to do that voice, which were not as simple as consciously doing a voice. It was more of an exercise in…I don’t know what you call it…There are all sorts of technical things I had to do with my mouth in order to achieve that sound. It was interesting, and certainly painful at times.”
Hardy previously told Variety that he had “no idea” how he would play the character when he first signed on. “All I knew was I wanted to play this role,” he said. “I didn’t know how they were going to use me and my design within the film.”
“Venom” hits theaters
Sony Pictures has released the first Venom trailer, giving viewers their first look at Tom Hardy’s titular character in the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff. The trailer shows off some of Venom’s superpowers, but it doesn’t reveal what the symbiote sounds like when he speaks.
In a recent interview, Hardy revealed that his inspiration for the voice was a combination of rapper Eminem and actor Liam Gallagher. “I can’t do the voice right now because I would sound weird, but there is a little bit of that in there,” Hardy said. “I always saw Venom as sounding like a James Brown lounge lizard, and I don’t know how to pull that off, and I don’t know how to sing like James Brown. There is a very nice chap called Liam Gallagher who does this very nice impression of him, so I have stolen Liam’s impression of James Brown…and maybe Eminem’s cadence? And then just put them in a blender. That’s probably why it sounds weird. But it was all those three elements.”
The Venom movie is set to be released on Oct. 5.
Tom Hardy’s Venom voice is unlike anything we’ve heard from the actor before, but there was a very specific reason for that.
In talking about his process for creating the Venom voice, Hardy indicated that he wanted to create something distinct from the character’s comic book counterpart, who speaks with a gruff tone of voice.
In an interview with Fandango, Hardy explained: “My wish was to keep it as far away from the American accent as possible. Because I feel like it’s a British character, and if I do too much of that [American accent], it becomes parodic. And then it becomes comedic, and then it becomes cartoon-ish.”
Hardy went on to say that he was inspired by two different characters in order to create his Venom voice: “I was thinking more of like a James Earl Jones kind of thing mixed with Bart Simpson mixed with Pepe Le Pew mixed with Kermit the Frog… and you can throw in a bit of Gravedigger from The Young Ones as well.”
Tom Hardy is an actor capable of playing a wide range of roles. His performances have previously been lauded by critics, and he has been nominated for several awards. From gangsters to soldiers, from cops to kings, he has been an interesting character in every movie he has played in.
And now he will play the role of Eddie Brock in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off movie Venom. Brock is the alter ego of Venom, an alien symbiote who gives his host incredible powers.
Tom Hardy has already shown that he can play any character thrown at him. He will be great as Venom, and it is exciting to see what he will do with the character.
In an interview with Total Film, Venom actor Tom Hardy revealed his inspiration behind the voice he uses to play the Spider-Man villain, who has a notorious way of talking.
“I always saw Venom as sounding like a James Brown lounge lizard, and I don’t know how to cut my tongue out,” Hardy explained. “So there was it, that’s what I based it on. Someone doing an impression of Chris Cornell.”
Hardy also explained that while he loved James Cameron’s Aliens and Predator, he didn’t want to take any cues from those films to create Venom’s voice. Instead, he wanted to use a different method of talking to express Eddie Brock’s dual personalities.
“I just tried to do something non-specific,” Hardy said. “There are two voices in my head when I am doing that character: One is Eddie Brock and one is this goo from space called Venom. I thought it would be interesting if they had different qualities rather than try and make them sound like the same person. So sometimes I sound like a demon, sometimes I sound like a monster or whatever, which does have its comedic value when you are not actually trying to do comedy.”
Hardy wants Venom to sound like a short, punchy, fast-talking, big-mouthed, New Yorker.
