College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP), is a national program that allows students to earn credit by examination. In addition to meeting prerequisite requirements of courses, students may take the examination to demonstrate proficiency in certain courses and receive course credit. Students may receive a maximum of 30 semester hours of credit through CLEP examinations. All CLEP examinations are given through computer-based format. The testing center at Georgia Gwinnett College offers all 33 CLEP exams.
The fees for each examination are $80.00, which includes the test fee and administration fee payable to College Board, the organization which administers CLEP tests, plus a $25 testing center administration charge payable to Georgia Gwinnett College. The total cost will be $105.00 per examination.

I have never been a fan of tests, but I became very familiar with one specific test – the CLEP (College-Level Examination Program). The CLEP is a series of 90-minute tests that allow you to receive college credit for knowledge you have acquired outside the classroom.
The test was developed by the College Board, which also administers AP exams, SATs and other standardized tests. The College Board states on their website that the CLEP is one of the most widely accepted credit-by-examination programs available today. More than 2,900 colleges and universities accept CLEP results, including Ivy League schools such as Harvard and Cornell.

What are CLEP Tests?
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests are standardized exams that test students’ knowledge of specific subjects. Each test is 90 minutes long, and they cost $80 each. Students who take the exam receive a score between 20-80, and the minimum passing score is typically 50-60, but it depends on which university you will attend. If you pass the exam with the required score, then you will earn college credit for that course at that university. Taking these tests can save students hundreds and even thousands of dollars per year on their undergraduate degree!
On the home page, click on the “CLEP Exams” link to see the exams that are available. The list is long, but don’t be intimidated. You will quickly notice two things: 1) there are a lot of exams you’ve probably never heard of, and 2) a few of them look really interesting to you.
You’ll want to take a look at a specific exam before deciding if it’s right for you. Click on the name of the exam you’re interested in to get more details. For example, here’s the page for American Government.
There are five important sections on each exam detail page:
The “Exam Description” gives an overview of the subject matter and format of the test, including sample questions. This is where you get an idea for what topics are covered and how the test will be designed.
The “Credit Recommendations” section tells which universities give credit for passing this exam, and how much credit they give (usually 3 or 6 credits). Also note if there is a recommended minimum score to earn credit; some exams have no minimum score, while others require 50+ questions answered correctly out of 80 or 90 total questions.
