Are you interested in becoming an actor? Have you been dreaming of starting a successful acting career, but don’t know where to begin?
You’ve come to the right place. I know firsthand that it can be extremely difficult to start a successful acting career, especially if you live in a small town and have no connections. I grew up in such a town, and I was fortunate enough to break into the acting scene at an early age. So, let me share with you some tips on how to get your foot in the door and make it big as an actor.
There are several steps that must be taken when becoming an actor:
1) Training is vital for success. No matter where you live or what your background is, it’s important that you receive professional acting training before beginning your career. You can do this by taking classes or workshops from professional acting coaches; many cities offer these programs for aspiring actors of all ages, so even if you’re not from Los Angeles or New York City, there’s probably one in your area!
2) Build confidence through practice and performances. Once you’ve started training, try to get involved in as many productions as possible – even if they’re just student films! This will give you experience performing on stage (or
So you want to be an actor. Well, here’s the thing: It’s not impossible to make it as an actor, but it is hard work and a bit of luck. But with the right attitude and determination, YOU can make it as an actor!
First things first – You need to decide if acting is really what you want to do. Ask yourself this question:
Do I have what it takes to be an actor?
To answer this question, you need to take a very honest look at yourself. Do you have what it takes? Do you have any talent? Are you willing to sacrifice everything for your career? Are you willing to put in the hard work required of a successful actor? If you answered yes, then read on.
If not, then go find something else that makes you happy because acting will only make you miserable.
A lot of people want to be actors. And I mean, a lot.
When I started my acting career here in Los Angeles, I was inundated with advice from the many friends, acquaintances, and well-meaning strangers who felt compelled to share their “wisdom” on this difficult business.
There was only one problem.
Most of the advice wasn’t good. In fact, much of it was terrible.
So many people seemed to have no idea what they were talking about, yet they would still tell me what they thought was best for me to do with my career.
But there is one piece of advice that has always stuck with me since I moved out here: “Just get an agent.”
It sounds simple enough. After all, if you’re going to be successful in Hollywood you need an agent, right? Well, yes and no.
Actors are constantly searching for new opportunities to propel their careers forward. Whether it’s a feature film or a commercial, being able to show your acting range will help you get the many types of jobs you’re seeking.
Feature films are one of the most common vehicles for actors to showcase their talent, and with prestige comes great opportunity. In 2014 alone, over 700 feature films were released in the United States alone; however, only a handful of movies ever have budgets over $100 million.
Commercials are also a great way to show your versatility as an actor; in 2014, over 400,000 commercials aired on television. Although they may not have the finances of larger feature films, they are extremely important to the television industry – in fact, commercials accounted for 11% of all ad spending in 2013.
Trying to make it in Hollywood is a lot like trying to get into a top college: there are a lot of qualified applicants, and only a few spots. So if you’re going to get in, you’ll have to do something to stand out from the crowd.
You don’t need me to tell you that. What you may not realize is that what will make you stand out is not going to be your acting talent. That’s because, practically speaking, acting talent is not really a thing.
Acting talent is just another way of saying “qualification for being an actor.” But since only a few people can play any given role, many more people are qualified than can actually get the job. The best way to increase your chances of getting a role is simply to apply for more of them.
Of course it’s possible to improve your odds by taking acting lessons or getting your face known in the community or whatever. But those are all just ways of increasing the number of roles you’re qualified for (and hence applying for). The reason actors spend so much time on these things is just that they’ve run out of roles for which they’re already qualified and hope these things will create some new ones.
If you’re serious about acting, you need to get acting training. A degree in theatre, or at least classes in film acting, will make a difference in your career. You’ll look more professional and be more marketable as an actor.
A good film acting school will teach you how to act for the camera and help you make important connections. Remember that acting is a craft. Study the craft of acting like you would any other subject if you wanted to be very good at it.
If you can’t afford classes, consider taking an online course. There are some good ones out there and they’re not expensive compared to live classes. Check out our list of recommended online acting schools.
At one point, the film industry was based entirely on the star system. Producers would buy film rights to Broadway plays, and then cast the same actors who had performed in them on stage. Audiences flocked to theaters because they were familiar with the names on the marquee.
Hollywood’s top actors of today are paid more than their counterparts ever were. Today’s stars generally get a huge chunk of a film’s earnings, in addition to a multi-million dollar salary. Their pay packets are due to the wide variety of media stars can exploit to make money from their fame, including film, TV and advertising.
