How Much Does An Actor Make? This is a question I get asked more than any other. There are so many different factors that go into this answer that it’s hard to give a straight up “on average” answer. But, I’ll do my best to break it down for you.

First off, there are some basic types of roles and contracts. To really understand what goes into an actor’s salary, you first have to understand the basics of the job.

Extras: Also known as background players or “atmosphere”, these roles usually don’t have speaking parts and are paid per day – not per week. The rate varies based on union status, but in general non-union extras make $64 per day and union extras make $140 per day.

Day Player: A day player is a non-contract actor who works for one or several days on a project. They get paid for every day they work – regardless of whether they have lines or not. Day players are either paid SAG minimums (if they are in the union) or an agreed upon rate with the production company outside of the union (non-union).

Union Minimums: These rates vary depending on what part of the country the production is taking place in,

If you are considering a career in acting, then one of the first questions that you may have is “How much does an actor make?” Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this question. Let’s look at some of the factors that go into determining how much money working actors make.

The Salary Range for Actors

Actors’ salaries are determined by their experience and success. There are many different levels of actors, from those who work only occasionally (and often for no pay) to those who have long careers in film, television and theater. The highest paid actors earn more than $20 million per film.

The average salary for an actor is difficult to determine, but most studies put it between $50,000 and $60,000 per year. This figure takes into account all types of acting – not just film and television. For example, some actors earn their living working on the stage or doing voice-over work for animated films or commercials.

Successful actors can expect to earn raises based on their work history and the quality of their performances. Less successful actors may find themselves earning less than they expected over time as they struggle to find good roles or steady work.

From the first Hollywood studio at the turn of the century to today, actors have always been paid handsomely. To say it’s a good business to be in is an understatement.

But how much does an actor make? Well, that depends on a few different things. The most important factor is the size of the production budget, and whether or not you are talking about a movie or television show.

How Much Do Actors Make on Small Movies?

For movies that cost less than $25 million to make (most movies fall into this category), actors are paid according to SAG’s minimum wage scale. Back in 1999 when I wrote my first article about how much actors are paid for my book “Sell Your Story In 60 Seconds: The Guaranteed Way To Get Your Screenplay Or Novel Read,” I said that for these smaller films, actors were typically paid between $2,500 and $20,000 per week. That was twelve years ago! Since then, due to inflation and other factors, those weekly wages have risen by about 10-15%. So now, it’s more common to see actors earning between $5,000 and $25,000 per week.

The average film actor salary in the US is $17.00 per hour. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, actors made an average of $39,070 per year as of May 2010.

As with any career, salaries vary based on location, experience, and other factors. The highest paid actors in Hollywood can make millions per movie. Most actors are paid by the job and may not have consistent work every year. Often they have other jobs to supplement their income.

Let’s say you’ve decided to take your acting seriously. You’ve done a lot of reading and research, you’ve taken classes and/or private lessons, and you’ve built a strong foundation as an actor. You feel confident in your abilities as an actor and ready to make acting a full time job.

You are now faced with the daunting task of trying to figure out what you should be paid as an actor once you become a professional. Before we can discuss how much you should be paid, it would be helpful to understand what the different types of jobs are, the money involved with each type, and how to get those jobs.

Sag-Aftra is a labor union that represents actors in movies and television shows across the country, as well as many radio commercials and voice actors for video games. The union has set minimum pay rates for actors working on sag productions and every production company must abide by these rules if they want to hire union talent.

The main difference between union and non-union is that sag productions provide residuals (extra money) for reruns of the show or movie on television or Netflix, while non-union work does not provide extra money for future use of their work.

Another common misconception is that actors make huge salaries. The reality is that only a small percentage of actors make enough money to live comfortably and these actors are typically famous because of their television or film roles. These actors can command millions of dollars for a few months’ work, with top actors making in excess of $20 million per movie.

Another way actors make money is from residuals. Residuals are royalties paid to an actor each time a movie or TV show airs. For example, Screen Actors Guild members earn $1,868 every time a commercial airs, and $19,140 each time a feature film is aired on television. Actors who are not members of the Screen Actors Guild will only earn a fraction of this amount.

The SAG-AFTRA union represents approximately 160,000 performers across the country and negotiates pay rates for its members through collective bargaining agreements with employers, who are usually major film studios and networks.
