Hopkins Actor’s Studio is owned and operated by experienced, working actors and directors. All of our coaches are professional actors or directors who have worked on television shows, movies, commercials, and Broadway productions.

Our private acting coaches will help you develop skills that are essential to becoming a good actor. They will guide you through the process of script analysis and character development. They will teach you how to use the right techniques for improvisation, auditioning and cold reading scripts in order to book more auditions and work as an actor.

We specialize in one-on-one classes for adults and children, with an emphasis on the basics of acting as well as individualized lessons adapted to the needs of each student.

The studio was begun by John Hopkins, who has been an actor and acting coach since 1976. He has worked extensively in film, television, theatre, commercials and industrial shows. He is the author of Auditioning for Film, Television and Theatre (published by Silman-James Press) and has been a guest lecturer at UCLA and California State University at Northridge.

Learning to act is like learning any other skill. It requires study, practice and lots of feedback. At Hopkins Actor’s Studio, students will learn the craft by studying a variety of techniques, using exercises that are fun and challenging. Each class is limited to 6 students, so performance based training is intense and highly personal.

At the core of our program is the Meisner Technique. Sanford Meisner was a member of the legendary Group Theatre in New York City, where he studied with Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler. The Technique is a step-by-step approach that focuses on emotional honesty and relaxation in performance. Students take a series of exercises that lead them through various states of becoming an actor, starting with being present in an environment and moving on to being present with another person, driven by action and reacting truthfully – moment to moment – in response to what they hear or see from their partners. The result is an approach that allows the actor to play off their instincts instead of relying on memory or facts to drive their performance.
