Hindi or Malayalam movies? Here’s how our platform can help: A blog about Imago’s movie rating system and how it can help you choose the best Indian movie.
When I watch a movie, I don’t just want to be entertained. I want to learn something new. And I want to be surprised. Every time I watch a new Indian movie, I try to understand what makes it unique: What is the genre of this movie? What was the budget? Who are the cast members? What is the director’s style?
Most importantly, what do other people think of this movie? How has it been rated by critics and viewers alike?
I have watched thousands of Indian movies, but there is no easy way to get this information. If you are like me, then you probably spend hours on Google trying to find answers to these questions before watching a movie.
The problem with existing platforms is that they mostly focus on Hollywood movies and tend to ignore Indian cinema in general. On the rare occasion that an Indian movie does appear on one of those platforms, it is usually ranked below Hollywood blockbusters for no other reason than being less popular in the West.
Ever watch a Hindi or Malayalam movie and find yourself wondering if it’s worth watching? You might instead be asking, “is this Hindi or Malayalam movie better than another?” Imago can help you answer these questions.
You can get started with Imago by creating an account. Once you’ve signed up, we will ask you to rate a few movies. This is necessary so that we can learn your preferences. Then, as you continue to use Imago and rate more movies, we get to know you even better!
You will then be able to browse the list of Hindi or Malayalam movies on the site and see your predicted rating for each one. We highly recommend the Top Rated Movies page. From there, you can click on See more info for any movie to get more details about it, including its plot description and our detailed rating breakdown (including a predicted rating for each individual user who has rated it).
The best part of Imago is that it gets better the more people use it! The more users there are and the more movies they rate, the better recommendations will be for everyone. So spread the word!
The pandemic has given us a chance to binge-watch all the movies we wanted to. From Hollywood classics to the latest Bollywood releases, people have been watching it all. If you happen to be an Indian movie lover, you most likely have felt the agony of sorting through thousands of regional films.
Watching a regional film is a lot of work. You need to do some research before you decide on a movie and even then there is no guarantee that it would be good! Even though there are thousands of movies in the market, only a few of them are worth watching.
This is where Imago comes in. Our movie recommendation system provides personalized suggestions for Indian movies based on your taste and mood. It’s just like having your own personal movie critic! Here’s how it works:
We at Imago are trying to solve the issue of how to find a good Indian movie. We have collected data and built a data driven system which predicts the likelihood of you enjoying a South Indian movie. Our model is based on a unique approach, where we employ the use of user generated content to predict the strengths and weaknesses of a movie, and present this information in an easy to understand visualisation.
The product is currently in closed beta. To get access, please sign up for our newsletter.
We have also created a series of articles, where we break down our data collection process, and analyze trends in South Indian cinema. These can be found under blog posts here on this site.
The Indian film industry is one of the largest in the world with respect to the number of movies produced every year. While Bollywood, the Hindi film industry is well known among Indian and foreign audiences, there are other regional film industries that produce even more movies than Bollywood.
A South Indian movie enthusiast who has no knowledge of Tamil or Telugu or Malayalam or Kannada, for instance, will have trouble choosing a movie to watch from a particular language. Even if he does have knowledge of a particular language, he might not be aware of the movies from that language as it is difficult to find good quality reviews and ratings for these movies online.
This is where Imago comes in. Imago is a platform that helps users discover Indian movies based on their individual tastes and preferences. Its unique recommendation engine uses the user’s profile information, rating history and other data to provide her with personalized movie recommendations at any time of the day.
Imago also provides a simple rating system where users can rate any movie they watch and see how their ratings compare with those of other users as well as critics.
Last summer I was watching the movie “The Social Network” with a friend. He doesn’t speak English, but he’s been learning to watch Hollywood movies in English. He started to watch “The Social Network” and after about 40 minutes, he turned it off.
I asked him what happened, and he said that it was so boring that he couldn’t bear to watch it anymore. I asked him if he wanted to see something else, and he said yes. We looked for something else on Netflix, but we couldn’t find anything that satisfied us.
So I opened up my laptop, went to IMDb and looked at the top 250 movies of all time. What we found was that many of these movies were rated poorly by users from India; this is because they had not seen many of these movies.
This made me realize that there must be a way to help people find movies that they would like; this is when I came up with the idea of using machine learning to predict the rating of a movie based on its content.
