When I was doing computer science research, my first year out of college, I had a great time. My boss was my favorite professor from school, and he gave me a lot of leeway to explore different ideas. The project went well, and I wrote a paper that’s not too bad if you’re interested in virtual machines in Lisp-like languages. But after a while I started to get bored. The work wasn’t challenging anymore, and my boss was away at conferences half the time so I didn’t even have him around to bounce ideas off of.
