A blog about how Bryan Cranston nearly missed out on this role and how he plays each role in his unique way.

Bryan Cranston was born in 1956 in California. He grew up there and then went to college at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He married his high school sweetheart, Robin, who is now a writer for the show. They have four children together and live in Malibu, California with their dog, Stella.

After graduation from college, Bryan began acting on stage before making his debut in a small part on The Tracey Ullman Show. His first major television appearance was as Tim Whatley on Seinfeld from 1994-1997. He has had many other guest roles on such shows as 3rd Rock from the Sun, NYPD Blue, The King of Queens, Judging Amy and more recently Six Feet Under and Malcolm in the Middle.

Bryan will always be known for his role as Walter White on Breaking Bad but he also has many feature film credits including Godzilla (1998), Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) and Argo (2012). He can currently be seen starring opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfus in HBO’s comedy series Veep where he plays Selina Meyer’s Chief of Staff

Bryan Cranston, who has won four Emmys and a Golden Globe for his role as Walter White in the AMC drama Breaking Bad, was nearly overlooked for the part. In 2008, the producers of Breaking Bad wanted to cast Matthew Broderick for the role of Walter White, but Vince Gilligan wanted Bryan Cranston. The two had worked together on Gilligan’s earlier show The X-Files.

Matthew Broderick as Walter White? Yes, that’s right. The actor known for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and War Games was almost cast in this once-in-a-lifetime role.

In his new book A Life in Parts (published October 11), Cranston reveals that he was not the first choice to play Walter White on the hit AMC series Breaking Bad. Creator Vince Gilligan was the one who pushed hard for Cranston to be cast in this iconic role.

Cranston writes that before he got the call about Breaking Bad, he was working on a TV adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower with JJ Abrams when he got a call from Gilligan.

Over the past few months, I have been watching Breaking Bad. I don’t watch many TV shows and this has been one of my first. The show is about Walter White (played by Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher who was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and decides to cook methamphetamine to fund his treatment and provide for his family after he dies. He teams up with a former student Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul).

The plot is great, but what I like most is how Bryan Cranston plays the role of Walter White. He makes you feel sympathy for Walter even though he does unethical things. A while back, I read an article that said that Bryan Cranston was not the first choice for this role. It was supposed to be Matthew Broderick. This makes me wonder if the show would have been as good if it was him instead of Bryan Cranston.

I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role besides Bryan Cranston because of how he plays it so well. It makes me want to look at other roles that he has played in other shows to see how good he is in those shows too!

Bryan Cranston shot to stardom with his portrayal of Walter White in the AMC drama, Breaking Bad. He garnered the lead actor Emmy four years in a row for his role as the chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin, and just finished up his run on Broadway with All The Way where he played Lyndon Johnson.

But according to Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, it wasn’t assured that Bryan Cranston would even get an audition for the role. In an interview with Charlie Rose, Gilligan recalls how he almost lost Cranston during the casting process.

“We were an hour away from shooting the pilot and we still hadn’t cast Walter White,” said Gilligan. “We finally met Bryan Cranston at Bronson Pinchot’s house… [Cranston] was perfect.”

Although AMC had been looking at other actors for the role like John Cusack and Matthew Broderick, Gilligan knew that Cranston was perfect for the part.

“I knew Bryan was our guy because I knew no other actor could give us that level of humanity,” said Gilligan. “He’s very smart and very funny and very subtle. He has more colors than any actor I have ever worked

Breaking Bad has been a worldwide hit. The show is based on a teacher who turns to cooking meth to pay for his cancer treatment. The show ran for 5 years and had 5 seasons. This blog will talk about the actor that plays Walter White, Bryan Cranston.
