This blog is dedicated to the longevity of actors, actresses, and other Hollywood professionals. It is meant to be a place where people can learn about the ins and outs of the industry, as well as a place for people who are familiar with the industry to share their own knowledge and ask questions.
I’ve spent my entire life immersed in the world of film. The first time I stepped onto a film set was when I was three years old, and since then, I haven’t left it. My father is a director, my mother an actress, and my brother an actor. My earliest memories are of watching my parents work on set while they held me in their arms.
When I was old enough, I began working as an assistant to my father on his films. I spent most of my time writing scripts, but I also did some acting on the side. At that point, I didn’t see myself as an actor or writer – I just wanted to make movies with my family.
I went to college and majored in English literature. In my senior year, I took a class called “Screenwriting 101” that really changed my life. That was when I realized that all of those years watching movies with my parents
There are certain things that every actor should know if they want to be recognized as a professional and respected in the industry. It’s important to know that you should always be punctual, you should always have great work ethic, you should always know your lines and you should always be courteous.
However, there’s one incredibly important thing that many actors don’t always think about early in their careers: longevity.
It might sound like an odd thing for an actor to think about when first starting out. After all, most actors hope for some level of success right away. But this is a mistake. That’s because longevity is what separates the good actors from the bad ones, the great actors from the good ones and the truly legendary actors from all of them.
But it isn’t just longevity that separates these types of actors. It’s also how they use it. Legendary actors are able to channel their longevity into greater success and more opportunities by choosing carefully what roles to take on, how much time off to schedule and how many times a year to audition for new parts.
A lot of actors and actresses don’t last as long in Hollywood as they want to. There’s many reasons for this. Some people just get sick of the long hours, stress, and lack of privacy that comes with a career in entertainment. Others find out too late that the acting business is not for them. But there are many actors and actresses who have been working in the industry for decades, and it’s probably because they make longevity a priority in their lives.
Longevity is about more than just living longer; it’s about staying healthy and happy while you’re alive. It’s also about making your life as long and fulfilling as possible. This makes sense if you think about it: if you spend your entire life miserable and unhealthy, then what was the point of having one?
So how do actors achieve longevity? They do it by making smart choices every day, both in their careers and in their personal lives.
Hollywood. Stardom. Fame. The dream that draws many to Los Angeles and other entertainment meccas across the country. For some it becomes a living reality and they live out the rest of their lives in the spotlight; for the majority, however, it will remain a fantasy. Many actors and actresses who are lucky enough to make it big usually have a relatively short shelf life in Hollywood, but for those who can last over the decades, there is a certain formula that has worked time and time again: versatility.
It’s not just about being able to play different roles and be convincing as various characters; it’s also about being able to adapt to changing times and conditions, understanding the business of show business, and keeping one’s outlook positive so that you never burn bridges with people you will inevitably have to deal with again down the road.
The challenge for an actor or actress trying to establish themselves in this town is finding their niche, learning how to become successful within their niche (whether it be television, film, or theater), then learning how to expand their niche so that they may work more often. The reason why most actors’ careers end up as little more than blips on the radar is because they never figure out
To kick off this blog and the series, let’s begin with a little history. In the early 1900s, if you wanted to be an actor, you went to Hollywood. Back then, Los Angeles and Hollywood were kind of like the wild wild west of film making. There was no stability in the film industry and no one was quite sure how it would turn out. It was difficult to make a solid living as an actor because there was no formal training or education that you could take before entering into the business.
In fact, it wasn’t until the early 1920s that Hollywood began using contracts with actors. Prior to that time, it was common for actors to not earn anything more than what they needed to eat and survive. And even then, it was only earned when they were needed for a job. This made earning a stable income as an actor very difficult.
As the film industry grew in Los Angeles, so did the city itself. More people began moving there from all over the country seeking work in films as well as other industries related to them (lighting technicians, costume designers etc.). This growth led to more films being made and established studios being built in order for those films to be produced. With more films came more jobs for actors
You’ve been in the biz for a while now, and you’re starting to get calls for parts that are interesting and challenging. You’re getting work as a character actor, but you want more leading roles. The problem is: you’re aging. But this isn’t something to worry about. Sure, the big studios don’t want to take the risk on people who aren’t young and beautiful, but there are many other opportunities out there for you.
Yes, it might be harder as you age to get the big roles, but it is also harder for younger actors to get the experience that most casting directors want from an older lead. You have gotten to where you are because you have earned it. It is time to play into your strengths.
1. Play the authority figure
2. Play against type
3. Contribute something unique
It’s a known fact that Hollywood loves to recycle the same actors and actresses time and time again. The same names keep popping up in movie after movie, as if Tinseltown was some kind of closed system with only so many roles to go around. Some people might find this frustrating, but it can actually be useful for budding actors looking to make it big.
In general, movies with the same cast tend to come out around the same time. That means, if you want your chance to shine, you should study the release dates of popular films and try to match them with your own timetable. Get your foot in the door, and then ride the wave of popularity as far as it will take you!
That is how true greatness is achieved.
