Actors and Actresses – What is the Difference? A quick blog to explain the difference between actors and actresses.
I’m sure you’ve heard the terms before, but what’s the difference? Well, not much! Here’s a bit of info to clear it up.
Actor/Actress: These are industry-specific terms for anyone who performs in front of a camera or on stage. It doesn’t matter if they’re male or female!
Male Actor: A male who performs in front of a camera or on stage.
Female Actor: A female who performs in front of a camera or on stage.
Use it correctly though! A lot of people use “actress” as an umbrella term, meaning “female actor”. While this is technically incorrect, and you will be able to tell when someone is being snobby by their choice of words, there’s no point getting upset about it. Use “actor” when you can, but don’t start a fight with your friends over it!
It is a question that has been asked many times before, but one that I am often asked when teaching my classes. Actors and actresses are essentially the same thing, lending their talents to create characters or tell stories through the art of performance.
The terms “actor” and “actress” were initially used to describe male and female actors respectively, but those days are long behind us now. This is especially true in British English where actor can be used in reference to either men or women.
In American English however, actress is still generally used to describe women who are actors. But there are always exceptions to this rule as well (Meryl Streep for example seems to mostly be referred to as an “actor”) So perhaps this is just another one of those things that only time will give us the answer to!

What is the difference between actors and actresses?
Some people believe that there is no difference, but in fact there is a considerable difference.
Actresses play female roles in films and on the stage, but can also play male roles. Actors, on the other hand, play only male roles. They do not, however, play female roles.
It can be difficult for an amateur to spot the difference between actors and actresses on television or film because their talents are so similar.
The main difference between an actor and an actress is gender. The term actor is used for a male performer, and the term actress is used for a female performer. This terminology has been the norm since the mid 1800s, when the theatre was dominated by men.
While the terms are still in use today, there is much debate about them and some people feel we should move away from using gendered terms. Some performers prefer to be known as actors regardless of their gender. In fact, many professional actors have petitioned for both terms to be banned altogether, as they believe it diminishes their artistry.
An alternative option would be to use the full titles “actor” and “actress”, but this can sound quite formal and doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue. If you’re writing an article or blog post about an actor or actress it’s probably best to follow their own lead on which term to use; if you’re unsure how someone prefers to be referred to you could always ask them directly or check out their social media profiles for clarification.

Actors
An actor is someone who portrays a character in a performance (also actress; see below). The actor performs “in the flesh” in the traditional medium of the theatre or in modern media such as film, radio, and television. The analogous Greek term is ὑποκριτής (hupokritḗs), literally “one who answers”. The actor’s interpretation of their role pertains to the role played, whether based on a real person or fictional character. Interpretation occurs even when the actor is “playing themselves”, as in some forms of experimental performance art, or, more commonly; to act, is to create, a character in performance.
Actresses
Actress: an actress is a female performer (from Latin actrix) in plays and movies. In some parts of the world women who perform on stages are called actresses regardless of their roles or ages.
