Every minute, blogs and news sites around the world publish content about Marvel films: interviews with actors, analysis of story plots, and more.

One such article is entitled “6 Actors Who Were Almost Cast in Black Panther Who Got a Deal With Marvel.” It lists actors who almost had roles in the film Black Panther, but ended up having roles in other films.

The article starts off:

“Black Panther was a huge hit for Marvel Studios. The movie became a cultural phenomenon and broke box office records all over the world. While people knew that Marvel was going to produce other movies with black superheroes in the future, it took a while to know what exactly they were going to do.”

The article then goes on to discuss specific actors and their experiences with Marvel films.

Marvel Studios has been making a lot of big moves this year. We’ve already seen the long-anticipated release of Black Panther, and soon we’ll be seeing the follow-up in Avengers: Infinity War.

But it’s the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next big film, Ant-Man and The Wasp, that we’re most excited about. Not only do we get to see Evangeline Lilly kick some ass, but it will also be the MCU’s first female-led superhero movie.

And even though there are a lot of exciting roles in Ant-Man and The Wasp, there could have been even more if Marvel didn’t cut some actors from the cast list. Here are six actors who were almost cast in Black Panther who got a deal with Marvel instead:

Michael B. Jordan was cast as Erik Killmonger in Marvel’s Black Panther, but the actor could have played another important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jordan was apparently considered for the role of Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot before losing out to his Creed co-star Taron Egerton.

“The process was exciting,” Jordan told MTV News. “I was very close.”

Jordan is far from the only actor who almost scored a deal with Marvel Studios. For example, Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse star Sophie Turner revealed that she auditioned for Scarlet Witch before Age of Ultron, while Michael Fassbender almost got cast in Thor before landing the role of Magneto. Here are six other actors who almost had a deal with Marvel.

While it may be a little difficult to swallow the reality that Chadwick Boseman was not the first actor Marvel Studios considered to play Black Panther, you have to remember that this is a movie that was in development for nearly ten years. And over time, ideas get tweaked and changed.

That being said, while the idea of any other actor playing T’Challa may seem absurd now, at one point or another, there were six other actors who were almost cast in Black Panther. Let’s take a look at them all:

1. David Oyelowo

Perhaps one of the more shocking names Marvel considered for the role was Selma star David Oyelowo. Back when Ava DuVernay was attached to direct, she had pushed for him to be cast as T’Challa. However, due to various reasons beyond anyone’s control, she eventually left the project and it seemed like Oyelowo would no longer be considered for the role. But just because he wasn’t chosen doesn’t mean his relationship with Marvel ended: Oyelowo recently signed a deal with Marvel to provide his voice for an unnamed character in an upcoming Disney XD animated series based on The Avengers.

2. Chadwick Boseman

The obvious

Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke are two of the biggest stars today, but they almost starred in a different Marvel movie.

Both actors ended up being cast in Black Panther, landing roles as Nakia and M’Baku, respectively. Before that happened though, they were almost in Captain America: Civil War.

Nyong’o was up for the part of Sharon Carter, which eventually went to Emily VanCamp, who reprised her role as Agent 13 from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Duke was up for the part of Spider-Man before Tom Holland nabbed the role; one person who was definitely happy about that casting decision was Chadwick Boseman who said it would be weird having another black actor in the role after Michael B. Jordan had played The Human Torch in Fantastic Four.

Boseman’s casting as T’Challa was announced in October 2014, and he has now completed three Marvel films with the character.

In a new interview with Variety, Boseman revealed that Marvel did not want him for Black Panther at first.

“I think I was on the shortlist of people they were considering, but I wasn’t the only one,” said Boseman. “I’m sure there were some people who were like, ‘Why are you even thinking of him? He’s not well known enough.’ But [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige is a very unique type of person in that he sees things very far ahead.”

“There’s an element of chance and there’s an element of feeling that you’re supposed to be somewhere,” added Boseman. “But it just felt like it was my time to get this part. I don’t know how else to describe it.”

The Black Panther is finally here, and if you’ve been on the internet at all in the past few months you’re probably aware of just how big it is. And while we were hoping that rumors of a sequel would be confirmed during Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had to break the bad news to fans.

“We always say we work on one movie at a time,” Feige said. “If you have any good ideas, put it in the movie you’re making. If you don’t, you might not be able to make another one. That said, Panther has been around for more than half a century in the comic books and there are many, many stories to tell.”
