Letβs face it: being a professional actor is not easy. There are so many things that can go wrong and so few things that can actually go right when it comes to the business of acting. Here are 5 tips on how to be a professional actor:
Hi I’m Bucky. I just graduated from the Yale School of Drama and have been a professional actor in New York City for five years now. I’ve acted on TV, in indie films, on Broadway, and Off-Broadway. I’ve worked with some incredible directors, writers, and producers. I’ve learned so much over the years about professionalism and what it takes to succeed as an actor in this business.
Here are my top five tips to help you be a professional actor:
* 1) Get off your butt
* 2) Be nice
* 3) Don’t be boring
* 4) Be prepared
* 5) Dream big
Here are 5 things you can do to be a better actor and professional in the entertainment industry.
1. Find a great headshot photographer you like and trust.
2. Sign up for free acting classes at your local theater.
3. Get an agent that represents you well as an actor.
4. Keep your headshot current, but also keep a professional portfolio of your work as an actor or model.
5. Go to acting classes, workshops or seminars whenever possible.
To be a professional actor you need to have an agent, or personal management. If you don’t have an agent, or personal manager, you can’t be a professional actor.
You’ll need to get yourself some headshots and a resume. Your headshot should fairly represent what you look like now. You can expect to pay at least $300 for your first set of headshots.
The next step is to put yourself in acting classes with a reputable acting teacher. There are many acting schools out there that are just after your money, so do your research before signing up for any classes. A good acting class will help you with your craft, acting technique and confidence.
Make sure that you know the industry terms and lingo concerning auditioning, casting, actors unions (SAG/AFTRA), agents/managers and pay rates. A good resource is SAG’s Actors Handbook which is available online at sagindie.org/actor_handbook.html
Get out there and start auditioning! We recommend seeking out non-union projects in order to gain experience and practice your craft while building up your resume.”
