In fact, it is a bit hard to decide who should be included on the list of 40 most famous women actresses ever. There are so many top-notch performers, and their career lengths vary so widely, that it is hard to compare them fairly.
Our criteria were somewhat strict: we tried to include only living or recently deceased women actresses who had made a significant mark on film culture. We also limited our choices to one woman actress per actress (so no double entries for Meryl Streep or Katherine Hepburn) and no ties. And we did not include television roles in the mix, though several of these women actresses have made a significant impact on TV too.
