Theatre is a very competitive industry, so in order to have the best chance of success you need to learn how to improve your acting as much as possible.
In this blog post we will share with you 10 tips to improve your acting. These tips will help you become a better actor regardless of whether you are just starting out or have been acting for a while.
1)Find Your Why
Why do you want to be an actor? This may seem like a silly question but it is one that is well worth thinking about. You need to know why you want to be an actor, and what it is about acting that excites and inspires you, as it is this that will keep you going when the going gets tough.
2)Learn About Acting Theory And Technique
Many actors choose to learn about acting by taking classes or joining a drama group that follows a particular technique such as Meisner or Stanislavski. If these techniques don’t work for you then there are plenty more out there, so do some research into different approaches and find the one that best suits your needs!
3)Practice Makes Perfect
In order to improve at anything, including acting, practice is essential. You should practice as much as possible whenever
Tips to improve your acting:
1. Explore the character’s reality and make sure you know what is at stake for him or her. If you don’t know why your character is doing something, how can you pretend it?
2. Know what you are doing when you enter the stage. Be very specific about your objectives, actions and intentions in every scene.
3. Don’t be afraid to take risks and make mistakes. You are not going to get better if you play it safe all the time. If a scene isn’t working, try something completely different that might be crazy because it might be just the thing that works!
4. Make sure you understand what the other characters want from you in a scene and how they are trying to get it. The more specific you are about their objectives, actions and intentions, the easier it will be for you to play off them and respond with truthfulness.
5. Study human behaviour outside of drama class/rehearsals – pay attention to people around you when watching TV or movies or even just walking down the street – all this information can help inform your choices as an actor!
1. Become a student of the craft. Too many actors think they can learn to act from doing it alone and from taking an acting class or two. To be a professional, you need to constantly educate yourself about your craft.
2. Find a teacher and study with them for at least one year. Acting is learning how to use your instrument (you) effectively. The more you know about yourself and the more tools you have at your disposal, the more effective you will be as an actor. And just like learning how to play an instrument, the more you do it, the better you get.
3. Be able to take direction. This means being coachable and willing to try new things and ideas while working on a scene or monologue in class or in an audition situation. Too many actors have one way of doing things and are unwilling to try something different that may prove more successful for them as an actor as well as in booking the part!
4. Practice in front of a mirror so you can see what your body is doing when you perform. Make sure you eliminate all useless gestures, tics, etc that get in the way of your performance, or worse yet, call attention to themselves and distract from what you are trying to communicate through your
How do I get better at acting?
That is the number one question that I get asked when people find out that I’m an actor. It’s usually followed by, “Can you teach me how to act?”
This is often accompanied by a look of desperation in their eyes like they are asking me to give them the secret recipe for happiness or something.
Usually, I just tell them to go out and do it. After all, how good can you get without putting yourself out there to actually act?
But, hey, if you want more tangible tips for improvement, here are 10 of my personal favorites that I use all the time as a working actor in Los Angeles:
1. Take an acting class
This is a very important tip to improve your acting, but you have to choose the right class. If you go to a place that focuses on gimmicks and tricks, or worse, they promise they can make you a star, run away! You want a teacher that cares about craft, character and storytelling. A great way to find such a teacher is by taking one of my classes!
2. Watch Good Movies
I can’t stress this enough. If you don’t know what good acting looks like, how are you going to act? Watch movies with great actors in them and see how their characters are created through the choice of decisions they make.
3. Watch Bad Movies
It helps to see what doesn’t work as well. See if there is anything you can learn from bad performances as well.
4. Observe People
You are not always going to be given lines from another person so it helps if you know how real people talk and interact with each other. Go out into the world and observe people. Listen in to conversations, watch body language and notice the small idiosyncrasies that make us all different from one another.
1. Write a list of things you love about acting and then make sure your classes contain these elements. For example, if you love watching plays, read as many as you can (get theatre reviews from the Guardian newspaper) and then go to see as many live performances as possible.
2. Make sure your acting classes are challenging! If you are being pushed outside your comfort zone into new acting techniques then you will grow as an actor.
3. A good drama teacher will encourage you to make mistakes and experiment in class because it’s only by doing this that we learn what works and what doesn’t work.
4. Set yourself goals for the future and make sure that each class helps you on your path towards achieving those goals. For example, if you want to be a professional actor one day, do some research on agents and casting directors in your area so that one day you can send them links to showreels of your acting work.”
